Daimler Supertruck Improves fuel economy to 115% mpg

For a semi truck, it is very difficult to gain enough improvement in fuel efficiency. Carrying tons of goods, these trucks travel all through the country and cover so many miles per day. But looking at so much of requirement of these trucks and their weak fuel economy, Energy Department decided to start Supertruck program in which they give a tough task to all the brands to boost this efficiency by at least 50 percent starting from 2009 versions. There are many trucks that have completed this task successfully but the achievement of Daimler Supertruck is outstanding.

Daimler Supertruc uses one gallon to travel 12.2 miles. This would not sound a great achievement, but statistics say it reaches to the DOE task very convincingly by a huge percentage of 115. This is not just an initial output but it has been officially verified a number of times.

Its previous version was looking like a regular semi truck. But now it has been aerodynamically modified dramatically with a new arching hood with faired wheels. It gains more power and now it has 10.7 liter size of its new engine which produces 390 hp, 1400 lb ft torque. It also has a 3D map which maximizes its efficiency. They are also willing to add solar controlled panels on its top trailer and updated aero parts. However, company cannot offer all of them at a sudden as it will hike the price a lot.

Daimler is willing to bring innovative ideas to this production. Freightliner has been showing off its Supertruck will full excitement in this year's Truck show of Mid-America. But Daimler has shown that they believe in achieving innovating ideas and spectacular engineering with amazing fuel efficiency.

During testing, this Supertruck produced amazing output. The final demonstrator drove it for five days, about 312 miles and total weight it managed is about 65,000 pounds GVWR. During this round, it kept an average speed of 65 mph and achieved 12.2 mpg as fuel economy. This positive result thrilled everyone, even the makers too.

Derek Rotz, who is the Principal Investigator of Supertrucks for North American Daimler Trucks, confirmed it. He also said it is deeply expected that they will try to implement on the review and suggestions they get from all around them to improve their program. Whatever they learn and whatever knowledge they gain will help them producing better result each time.

Now, there are so many technologies developed which can be implemented to build an even better Supertruck such as 6x2 super optimization and aerodynamic parts which are present in integrated Detroit's powertrain and Cascadia Evolution. There are few strategies such as down speed with custom engines which have use and rate predictive abilities with intelligent power trains management parts like preloaded 3D map which can control shifting with eCoasting events which played a great part in reducing fuel consumption. One of the main initiatives is exploring the facts, optimize and design a system which won't compromise on power but will produce tremendous fuel economy and Daimler Supertruck certainly does that.
