Daimler Starts Production of World's First Lightweight Electric Truck - Fuso eCanter
|   Saturday, September 16, 2017
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) announced at the end of July the start of the small series production of the world's first fully electric light trucks - Fuso eCanter.

Fuso is a company in the portfolio of Daimler Trucks Asia. The opening event was held at Tramagal (Portugal), where all eCanter models for European and American markets will be produced. This is where versions with conventional powertrains of the Fuso Canter truck are made.

At the launching event, including the President of Portugal, several representatives for the authorities were present. The Portuguese Government has supported the development of eCanter since early 2010.

The information received from the authorities and the pilot clients who will receive the first eCanter models in the next period, as well as their practical experiences will contribute to the future expansion of large-scale production.
The Fuso eCanter is produced on the same line as the conventional Canter lightweight truck. Only the specific components of the power train will be installed in dedicated segments of the production line. Cars currently produced in small series at the Tramagal plant in Portugal will be delivered to European and American customers during the following months.

Fuso eCanter helps reduce pollution and noise problems in urban ecosystems. Besides ecological aspects, the lightweight completely electric truck is also cost-effective, providing users with considerable savings. Compared to a traditional diesel powered truck, Fuso eCanter allows savings in operating costs in real value of up to 1,000 euros for every 10,000 kilometers.

The light truck Fuso eCanter has a range of 100 kilometers and a load capacity of 2 to 3 tones - depending on the bodywork and the way of use. The truck contains 6 high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, producing 420 V and 13.8 kWh each, supplied by Accumotive - the Daimler subsidiary in Kamenz, Germany.
The Tramagal plant has an area of 160,000 square meters. More than 400 employees produce the Fuso Canter for around 30 countries across Europe, alongside Israel, Morocco and Turkey. Approximately 95 percent of the vehicles produced in Tramagal are for export.

Also, starting from 2012, employees at the Tramagal plant produce the hybrid version of Canter - Fuso, Canter Eco Hybrid.
Marc Llistosella, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation and Head of Daimler Trucks Asia stated at the occasion: “With today’s start of production of the eCanter, we become the first global manufacturer to produce an all-electric truck in series. From now on we can address the growing demand for locally emission free delivery trucks in Mega-Cities. We already received the first customer orders and will mark the global launch of this truck in one of the most iconic Mega-Cities, in New York, this September. Our Portuguese plant does not only produce the trucks for Europe and the US, we also benefit from a close cooperation with the authorities in Portugal and Lisbon testing the trucks there since 2014.”

In May, MFTBC announced its first commercial client on the Japanese market: Seven-Eleven Ltd. will operate 25 units of the new eCanter in their fleet this year.
