Daimler Could Buy Aston Martin And MV Agusta
|   Saturday, September 13, 2014
Daimler AG, the German company that owns the brands Mercedes-Benz, Smart, Maybach, Freightliner and Thomas Built, could expand its portfolio with two other prestigious brands, according to the Americans from Car & Driver.

We are talking about the independent manufacturer of supercars Aston Martin and Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta. For the moment, any formal decision is yet to be taken, says the German source cited by American Car & Driver, but both brands are considered for purchase.
While buying Aston Martin as an investment supports the current partnership, it also prevents any financial problems for the Gaydon brand, purchasing the Italian manufacturer of sports motorcycles would mark the entering of the German brand in this industry after rivals from Audi bought the Ducati brand.

The partnership between Daimler AG and the British from Aston Martin was signed last year and the Germans already have five percent of the British manufacturer of exotic sports cars. The Germans already know that Aston Martin needs a strong technological infusion, already being their technical partners after the British brand's collaboration with Ford draws to its close. In addition to the technical elements received from Daimler, Aston Martin is independent in terms of design and other departments related to the development, production and sales of cars. Currently, the complete acquisition of the Aston Martin brand by Germans at Daimler has a probability of 50 percent.

The acquisition of the Italian MV Agusta is significantly more likely than buying the British sports cars brand, according to sources quoted by the American publication. First, this acquisition would help the Germans appear on the list of automobile manufacturers who have in their portfolio a motorcycle brand and the icing on the cake of this acquisition would be MV Agusta's pedigree in the world of two-wheel motorization.

Some say that this acquisition would come as revenge seeing that Audi have bought the brand Ducati. Daimler had a partnership with the motorcycle manufacturer in Bologna, before it was bought by Audi, and Ola Källenius, Head of AMG Division, said that the partnership between Ducati and AMG is "perfect", the two brands having a matching character, and his statement included an intention to purchase the brand if its owners wanted that.

The company that owns the MV Agusta brand is led by Claudio Castiglioni, and is called MV Agusta Motor Holding Srl, the Italians buying famous brand from American Harley Davidson. In the past the MV Agusta brand, the equivalent to Ferrari in the motorcycle world, was owned by the Malaysians at Proton, by the Italian company Cagiva and by an Italian holding company.

Like Ducati, the brand has passed through many financial problems but those from MV Agusta aim at the upper segment of motorcycle market compared to what the Japanese manufacturers and the Bologna brand want.

MV Agusta is a stylish product and capable of development. It has a history and a definite place in the World Superbike Championship, although its financial situation is precarious right now.

Mercedes could direct research and development resources that will allow MV Agusta to again compete with those from Ducati and BMW.
