Daimler Chief Thinks Google Is Not A Real Competitor Even If It Can Shake The Auto Industry

Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, believes that Google will not be an opponent of the major players in the automotive industry, despite the fact that it will bring on the table completely new technology in the field of autonomous vehicles.

Google is preparing to launch an autonomous car, but that does not make the major manufacturers fear the competition brought by the company specialized in software, headlines Automotive News. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler, says that Google is unlikely to become an automotive manufacturer with large volumes of sales, even though it has the potential to disrupt an entire industry with its experience in software and its application in automatic control systems.

Google is one of the major players on a long list of companies willing to impose their rule in the autonomous vehicles realm and has a chance to unseat some traditional suppliers of sensors and equipment, if they prove their skills.

Google has announced that its project autonomous cars have traveled over 480,000 kilometers without incident. We are talking about a cumulative total of 12 vehicles that passed through various traffic conditions without any incident while they were controlled by computers.

Zetsche is not at the first such statement on the American company, stating upon presentation of the autonomous car from Google that the company probably has the goal of understanding how autonomous vehicles will be used and not build them. Dieter Zetsche declared himself convinced that Google is studying autonomous vehicles and how they work.

This knowledge is used as they did for homes and businesses, to develop technologies and systems that they can better serve customers. Google's involvement in the field of autonomous vehicles is not similar to that of a conventional automobile manufacturer, or so the director of Daimler AG is convinced.

"Google and the likes want to get involved, I don't think in the first place to build vehicles. We have to understand that, and then to find our roles, to which extent they are complementary, to which extent we become dependent, to which extent we are competitors. When we talk about high safety with Mercedes, it does not apply specifically for protection from accidents, but this means safety of their personal data as well. To be able to provide that, we have to keep control, and we can't do that when it is collected by Google," said Zetsche.

Adam Jonas, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, estimates that all cars that will be on sale in 2046 will be completely autonomous. His estimates announces 2026 as being the moment when autonomous cars will be launched on the market; at the same time 20 years are needed for the sale of these cars to become dominant in the automotive industry.

Mercedes-Benz has already developed a vehicle that can drive autonomously and succeeded in integrating this technology for the truck division. Unfortunately for fans of the German brand which awaited the debut of their first autonomous cars, the legislative framework in several states does not allow traffic on public roads of this category of cars. The folks at Google are actively working to improve this situation in the US, although the legal obstacles of the Americans are different from those in Europe.
