Dacia To Have A Model Based On The New Renault Twingo
|   Tuesday, March 18, 2014
Dacia will receive an entry model in its range based on the new generation Renault Twingo, recently launched at the Geneva Motor Show, according to German media. According to German magazine Autobild, the budget model will have a very low base price, about 5,000 euros. Few things are known about the new Dacia model, but it will certainly be less equipped than the Twingo, but with the same rear-wheel drive architecture.

A Dacia model which costs 5,000 euro is the old dream of Louis Schweizer and is still unfulfilled.
He is the man who imagined the Logan saga could become reality in 2015, if the German press assumptions will come true: a Dacia city model, with a platform based on the recently retired Renault Twingo 2.

Hypothesis on a mini segment city model in the Dacia product range appeared somewhere after the launch of the Sandero. The specialized motoring press has relied on the fact that a smaller and cheaper Dacia than the current hatchback will have the role of mobilizing a group of potential customers who cannot afford a new car.

Obviously, the reactions of Dacia have always been reserved on this subject, the barrier being related to the profitability of such a solution: a model with the size of a Citroen C1, that costs very little, would mean an investment that cannot be justified by Dacia in the current universe.

However, with the advent of the new generation Renault Twingo, which receives a completely new platform, developed in collaboration with Daimler, from which will be born the new Smart Fortwo, the logic of this model in the Dacia product range suddenly becomes strong. That's because the old Twingo platform could be used by Dacia.

Obviously, the appearance of such a model in the range of the Romanian brand would bring the same benefits it has already for the B0 platform of the Logan: the reliability tested in many years of market career, the Renault engines in the range, and a very good price ensured by reusing many components: that amounts to about 5,000 euro.

Regarding the engines, the Twingo comes with a turbo 0.9-liter engine with three cylinders developing 90 hp and 135 Nm. Dacia could be powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated unit, which develops 70 hp and 91 Nm.

The new Dacia mini mode should be equipped but with a minimum of safety systems, as required by law, including ABS, ESP and two airbags. The new Renault Twingo launched at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show was created in collaboration with Daimler, a project started in 2010. The German manufacturer will soon launch its own version of the Smart city, with two and four seats.

The recycling of the Twingo 2 platform is a hypothesis that came from the German Autobild journalists, who say the factory which would build this model might be in Russia, at the Renault and AvtoVAZ factory.

The model would be aimed at emerging markets, which means that Western Europe would be bypassed at the launch of such a model.
