Consumer Reports Releases Top Reliability Survey for US
|   Thursday, November 10, 2016
This Monday, Consumer Reports released the results of their reliability survey and the results were more or less as you would expect them to be. As usual, the top positions were occupied by the Japanese from Toyota and their friends from Lexus. The rest of the leaderboard suffered some modifications, as we will soon see.

The 2017 Consumer Reports Annual Reliability Survey is compiled from the information delivered by the publication's many subscribers.
Overall, some 300 models were analyzed and the final 29 brands landed on some interesting positions. Note that the top 8 brands are the "most reliable," the next ranks up to 18 are "reliable" with the last 11 ranks being the "least reliable".

Now, without further ado, here are the top "most reliable" brands.
Number 8 – the least "most reliable" is the Infiniti name which had 4 models scrutinized and managed to jump 16 position compared to last year for a total score of 62 points out of 100 possible.
Number 7 – Hyundai managed to climb just 2 positions over last year's placement. They scored 66 points with 7 models.
Number 6 – Mazda went down 2 positions after 5 models were considered, but still managed to score a respectable 68 points.
Number 5 –The Koreans from Kia climbed 1 position compared to last year after 4 models from their range were surveyed. They scored 69 points.
Number 4 – The Germans from Audi fell one position to number 4 this year, managing to accumulate 71 points spread over 7 models.
Number 3 – Native Buick climbed nicely the ladder, up 4 positions from last year, scoring 75 points from just 4 models.
Number 2 – Toyota remains in second place just like last year. The Japanese have 78 points from 12 models and are holding strong.
Number 1 – As hinted at the start, Lexus remains this year's champion too. They had 9 models under scrutiny and scored an impressive 86 points.

That wraps up the "most reliable" brands for this year. The "reliable" category has some interesting names too. Among them we have BMW (up 2 spots), Honda (down 2 spots), Acura (up 6 spots), Chevrolet (up 5 spots) or Mini (down 4 spots).
Closing the leaderboard are the "least reliable" brands, and for the first time an all-electric company is present: Tesla. They entered the fray on number 25 with only 2 models, but it's only their first year and there's room for improvement.

As expected after Diesel-Gate, the Germans from Volkswagen have been hit hard and fell 9 positions (the biggest fall!), down to 22nd place with just 30 points from 8 models. Volvo didn't perform particularly well either, going down 7 spots compared to last year, only managing to secure 19th place on the leaderboard.

It's interesting to see that most American brand can be found at the bottom of the list. Names like Lincoln, Cadillac, Dodge, Chrysler and GMC are all basement dwellers, many of them ranking lower this year than they did last year. May this survey serve as (another) wake-up call.
