Confusion over speed limits on German roads
|   Thursday, May 16, 2013
There seems to be confusion with the speed limits on the German roads. The SPD party in German which is now in the opposition have opted that the speed limits on all German roads should be 120 km per hour which is equivalent to 75 miles per hour. There seems to be a lot of political pressures on the government to settle the issue. The Green party in Germany said that the speed limits should be 80 km per hour or 50 miles per hour.

However the leader of the SPD party decided not to make any comment on the point of the green party.
This is highly unusual as there are rumours that the green party and the SPD party will form an alliance if the SPD party win the elections. So there are a lot of problems persisting at the moment with the traffic conditions in Germany.

At present the speed limit in 40 per cent of the German roads is about 130 km per hour. This is permanent for some roads and temporary for some roads. So the SPD party has proposed the idea of 120 km per hour speed limit for all roads.

The automobile organization in Germany ADAC has opposed the SPD party and the green party. They have opposed the ideas of both the parties regarding this decision. The organization made it very clear that in spite of using only one third of the German roads the Autobahns account for a very mere 11 per cent of the serious road accidents in Germany.

Normally the German roads are very safe. The roads and infrastructure of the streets are very safe in Germany. There is no question of altering the traffic conditions in such a safe scenario. When there is no fault why should the government consider changing the conditions around the roads? This is not a great idea. There may be a lot of political turmoil regarding this issue with all the political parties getting involved to make the correct move at the correct time.

There have been no comparisons made regarding the statistics with the Autobahns that are derestricted and those that have a fixed speed limit. The comparison could probably throw some more light on the fact whether the alterations are required or not at the moment. The comparison will come into play at some point of time or the other.

The ADAC is thinking on the issue. They will make sure that the junctions that have a lot of traffic or are accident prone will be made more secure. Minor roads will be marked down carefully. A better tracking system will be used for maintaining discipline on the roads. All these measures will make the roads a lot more safe and accessible. Deaths due to accidents can be reduced using these measures. So the thought being the new rules are very important to the German roads.
