Classic Aston Martin DB5 Inspired Facelift for the XKR
|   Tuesday, April 01, 2014
Aston Martin's classic DB5 is set to get a new leash of life. David brown, a British Businessman, has just revealed a new variant of Jaguar's XKR, based on its classic counterpart, from the 60s. Brown will showcase this new vehicle at the Top Marques Show, to be held at Mocano on 17th April 2014. This vehicle has been christened, the Speedback GT and is designed completely using aluminum.

This vehicle has been designed based on the current generation XKR platform, although considerable modifications have been made to its exterior, using aluminum sheets, twisted by hand, to give it a retro feel.
Engineers at Jaguar were contacted for updates and review on this vehicle and they were fairly proud of this outcome and were thoroughly satisfied by this attempt.

This vehicle, according to Brown, will not compete with any production Jaguar, as development costs will be impractical to deal with. However, Brown will start his own customization facility and plans on building 50 units per year. This vehicle draws inspiration from Aston Martin's iconic DB5 and DB6 models that were a rage during 1960s. Chief Designer Alan Mobberley, who worked on Land Rover's designs during the 60s, says that, this vehicle has taken inspiration from Maserati and Ferrari too.

There had been numerous American inspired British GT projects, complete with tubular chassis and fiber glass body panels. However, none of them produced successful results. Brown says modern engineering is to be thanked for this project gaining success. 3D motion scanning and printing technology is used to design an outlay for the original DB5 and these measurements are then used for cutting out exterior body panels for the XKR.

Major changes in performance are unlikely, as both vehicles feature equal weights due to similar material usage. The Speedback has received numerous interior and switchgear modifications that are custom made solely for production. A laser melted 63 micron thick nickel alloy has been used on this vehicle. This proto type has been designed by Envisage, which is keen to work on major brands, as well as small firms.

The Speedback is soon to feature a convertible variant that will be made available. This is a very unique design and idea, even as various other carmakers have failed in the past, which makes it a risky endeavor too. Details are yet to be announced as we are currently unaware of details and drive train features about this vehicle. Prices too, are to be announced shortly. If you want to give your Jaguar XKR a retro feel, you could be asked to spend anything between £100,000 and £1 Mliion.

Manufacturing costs are currently unknown, while major changes to drive dynamics are to be announced. A complete exterior overhaul will definitely lead to aerodynamic changes, even though its final outcome is to be duly noted. Stay tuned for additional information regarding the Speedback GT and we will get back to you with details, drive test information, along with an updated gallery soon.
