Citroen Peugeot PSA working on new Hybrid Air technology
|   Wednesday, January 30, 2013
Citroen Peugeot PSA has showcased a new power train system using compressed air in place of electricity as means of a secondary power source. The company calls the system, Hybrid Air and if installed in a regular production model, it could limit the CO2 emission from the Peugeot 208 or the Citroen C3 (for example) to 69 g/km. The figures are quite impressive nonetheless, although the company needs to make a major headway into the design before they are actually able to install the system into a production model.

The Hybrid Air technology consists of a conventional petrol air internal combustion technology and is mated to an epicyclical transmission system featuring a hydraulic transmission fuelled by compressed air. The pump and motor have been fitted into the engine bay itself and this saves space as well as provide more force due to the large amount of propulsion created.

The technology also makes use of braking capability to regenerate energy from the motor and this is another interesting modification made to the original design. The motor in turn has regenerate air into the tank. The engine can run on air / petrol or combined depending upon the usage however it is recommended that air power be used extensively for city usage only as it is unable to create the maximum propulsion that is required for maximum speed.

Air power usage is created below the 43 MPH mark and could be used for 60 to 80 percent of the times the vehicle is used within the city. Three drive models have been provided – zero emission, full petrol and hybrid – and its usage is dependent on the driving conditions and the need of the moment.

The technology is however set to add an excess of 100 kg to the standard petrol or diesel powered vehicle and weight reduction measures are currently being planned. Usage is however quite simple as there are no complex structures involved and this power train could specifically be used to attract customers in China, Russia and most other European countries. This powerhouse could also save up to 40 percent of the total fuel consumption than a standard petrol vehicle and is 90 percent more effective in range than a standard hybrid vehicle.

PSA wants to use this technology for the B and C segment vehicles and is also working on other useful alternate technologies that could effectively power cars for the future generations. The next target is to develop a vehicle using alternate fuel cell technology that is capable of displacing 80 – 100 BHP just as any normal petrol vehicle. The first production ready models are expected to be officially unveiled in 2016.

However, Citroen Peugeot PSA hopes to reveal the basic idea of the vehicle, in the form of a vehicle in the Geneva Motor Show 2013. However, this is a mere speculation as nothing has been confirmed by the company as of yet. This is a very important technological advancement in the forward direction and could open up new doors for the future generations.
