Citroen C4 Cactus, First Teaser Images Of The New French Crossover
|   Saturday, January 04, 2014
Citroen has begun the promotion campaign of the new C4 Cactus more than a month before the official release. The compact crossover's debut is scheduled for February 5, 2014, on the day that celebrates five years since the launch of the DS range and 136 years since the birth of Andre Citroen, founder of the French brand.

The new Citroen C4 Cactus will be the first member of a range of affordable models that will carry the name "Cactus". The affordable range of the Citroen models will be increased if this first member will be considered a commercial success.
In the future, there is the possibility that this range to replace the French manufacturer's standard range, but this assumption is still far away from reality. The French officially did not show any expectation on the C4 Cactus' commercial outcome.

Despite the fact that is part of a range with an affordable price, the C4 Cactus will have a body side molding system with air capsules called Airbumps, and a bench seat in place of the individual front seats. The two eccentric elements serve to distinguish the crossover from other models on the market. The engine range has not yet been announced, although representatives of the manufacturer stated that the 1.6 THP turbocharged unit is not available on this model.

"You won't find the 155-horsepower [turbocharged 1.6-liter] THP engine in the Cactus. If we did it, we'd need bigger brakes, a bigger, wider structure that makes it more expensive. We've got the DS3 for that," said Pierre Monferrini, chief of Citroen's C line, for Britain's Autocar magazine.

That concept car of the Citroen C-Cactus made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007. The car is named for its low fuel needs, using a more economic diesel engine, much like the cactus plant.

When it will finally arrive in showrooms across Europe, the crossover will face strong completion from the popular Dacia Duster.
Other noteworthy details concerning the model, or rather its concept car, are as follow: the Cactus Concept benefits from the new platform EMP2, while presenting a length of 4.21 m, a width of 1.75 m wide and a height of 1 .53m. Furthermore, the Cactus will be outfitted with the latest PSA Air Hybrid powertrain, a pack containing a compressed air and hydraulics system, mated to a PureTech gas powered engine.

Weighing just 100 kg, the entire hybrid system shears about half of the weight a classical hybrid system has.
Another interesting feature of the Citroen C4 will be the low fuel consumption, standing at just 3 liters / 100 km, or 94 mpg, thus proving why designers called it "cactus". The model is supposed to lower average fuel consumption in urban areas by 45 percent.

Lastly, the driver of a Citroen's Cactus Concept can drive quite comfortably, because the 8-inch touchscreen is linked to all vehicle functions, like air-conditioning, satellite navigation, audio system, driver aids, infotainment system and connected services.

We will see just how much of the concept car passes onto the real thing, and we will update you when that happens.
