Chrysler 200, Sold In Europe As The Lancia Flavia, Gets A New Generation At The Detroit Auto Show
|   Tuesday, January 14, 2014
The Chrysler 200 mid-range model, owned by the Fiat Group, has just seen a new generation at the Auto Show in Detroit. The new Chrysler 200 replaces the model with the same name which debuted with a major facelift applied to the Sebring. Unlike the model it replaces, the new one boasts a new technical platform, taken from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, combined with a dedicated range of engines for the U.S. market and a redesigned interior.

All the above changes are intended to bring the Chrysler 200 on the sales podium in the United States, a place where the brand didn't have a representative in recent years.
The launch of the new Chrysler 200 is important for Europe as the Lancia model will arrive in showrooms under the name Flavia.

The engine range of the Chrysler 200 includes two units, both petrol and associated with an automatic transmission with nine steps. We are talking about the "Tigershark" 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit that delivers 184 hp and 234 Nm, and the "Pentastar" V6 engine displacing 3.6 liters that provides 295 hp and 360 Nm. Optionally, Chrysler offers a drive system capable of fully disengaging the rear axle when grip conditions are favorable for the front wheels. Everything happens without the driver intervening or feeling anything, at least that how the American's brand representatives praise it.

The technical platform of the new Chrysler 200 is called the "Compact U.S. Wide" and is a modified version of that found in Europe on the Alpha Romeo Giulietta range. The main changes are at wheelbase and track gauge, in addition to changes in characteristics necessary to configure the model according to the preference of American drivers. For those who want sporty handling worthy of Europe, Chrysler recommends the integrated sport mode.

The new Chrysler is the fifth model in the Fiat-Chrysler portfolio which is equipped with the same platform as the Dodge Dart, Fiat Viaggio and Jeep Cherokee. Dodge Dart, Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler 200 share between 50 and 70 percent of the components, says Mark Chernoby, head of product planning and development of the American company. However, there are significant links between these models while still maintaining their own personalities.

The launch of the new Chrysler 200 is essential for the future of the American brand. The D segment is the most popular in the U.S. market, mid-range sedans representing 17 percent of total cars bought in 2013. The old Chrysler 200 was surpassed in sales by the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata. According to data provided by specialists from Autodata, only the Volkswagen Passat failed to overtake Chrysler 200 sales in 2013, although the German model was bought by 109.652 customers.

The weak sales scored by the Chrysler 200 in 2013 are among the causes which led to the negligible market share increase of the Americans, from 11.4 in 2012 to only 11.5 percent in 2013. The brand plans to increase sales and market share this year, and they expect the new platform to sell over a million units per year by 2016.
