Chevrolet Won The Most Coveted North American Titles: Car And Truck Of the Year 2014
|   Wednesday, January 22, 2014
The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Silverado have won the most coveted car titles in North America – the Car of the Year 2014 and the Truck of the Year 2014. For the first time in the history of the competition organized every year since 1994, Chevrolet manages to go home with both trophies.

The new Corvette Stingray had to face in the final the new Mazda 3 and Cadillac CTS, two indirect rivals, from completely different classes. On the list of nominated cars for Car of the Year, some important names appeared in the final round such as the BMW Series 4, the Chevrolet Impala, Infiniti Q50, Jaguar F-Type, Kia Cadenza, Lexus IS, Mazda 6, Mercedes-Benz CLA and Toyota Corolla.

The situation was repeated in the category Trucks and vans / SUV, the pick-up Silverado entering into the final round along with two premium models, located at the ends of the segment, the Jeep Cherokee and Acura MDX. The other candidates had been the BMW X5, Buick Encore, Hyundai Santa Fe LWB, GMC Sierra, Kia Sorento, Nissan Rogue, Range Rover Sport, Subaru Forester and Toyota Tunda.

The contest finalists for the Car of the Year/Truck of the year 2014 in North America were selected by an independent jury, made of 48 automotive journalists from the US and Canada, representing magazines, newspapers, radio, television, and web sites. In order to be eligible, the cars must have had a generation change or a major facelift in the last 12 months, and to have been launched in 2013.

For Chevrolet, with the two awards received this year, they reached the sixth Car of the Year title, respectively Truck of the Year. Over the years, only two other brands have succeeded to triumph at the same time in both categories: Ford, in 2010, with the Fusion Hybrid and Transit Connect models and Honda in 2010, with the Civic and Ridgeline.

General Motors has won both awards in 2007, with the previous generation pick-up Chevrolet Silverado and Saturn Aura sedan. Last year, the North American Car of the Year was the Cadillac ATS and the Dodge Ram nabbed the Truck of the Year title.

The jury granted 211 points to the Stingray model, with the Mazda3 receiving 185 points and 94 points to the Cadillac CTS.

Continuing to the tucks, the jury awarded the Silverado 219 points, the Jeep Cherokee got 174 points, and the Acura MDX 97 scored points.

"I'm really proud of the whole global product development team, starting with design through engineering and powertrain," GM CEO Mary Barra told reporters Monday. "They've worked really hard. They've sweated the details of each and every aspect of those vehicles."
General Motors hopes that these titles will also reflect in terms of sales.

"I hope that people look, and if they haven't considered General Motors or Chevrolet, they'll get into the showroom because I'm confident if they get to the showroom, they're going to see a lot of vehicles they'll like," Barra said.
