Chevrolet to Install Data Recorded on the 2015 C7 Stingray
|   Wednesday, January 08, 2014
Chevrolet has designed an integrated video and audio telemetry recording device that it plans on offering with the latest Corvette C7 Stingray soon. Known as the Performance Data Recorder or PRD, this device has been designed together with Cosworth Engineering House, a motorsport engineering firm based out of Northampton. Chevrolet has announced its official debut at the International Consumer Electronics Show, which commences today in Las Vegas.

Cosworth supplies electronic data measurement devices used by Chevrolet Racing on their Le Mans vehicle.
This is a fully integrated device which is used to record high definition videos, with telemetry layers of different drive experiences on and off track. The PDR setup consists of a high definition film camera, mounted between the windscreen and trim. It records from the driver's view point and captures live audio through a dedicated microphone.

The recorder has as integrated GPS device which is capable of operating five times quicker than any commercially used satellite navigation system. This helps during precise cornering and aids better positioning. Recording controllers are hot wired into the C7 Stingray's main frame computer, which provides vehicle information such as engine speed, steering wheel angle, gear selection and brake force. The PDR system is capable of recording numerous data and has specific overlay functions.

Track mode has various visible data levels such as RPM, g-force, speed, lap time and a GPS based map. Sports mode displays basic data information only while Performance mode shows performance data such as quarter mile speed, acceleration and elapsed time. Data can easily be stored into an SD card - which sits neatly in the glove compartment – while an 8 GB SD card is capable of storing approximately 200 minutes of drive data.

Videos can be viewed on the Stingray's eight inch touch screen infotainment system and can be downloaded onto a computer for further editing and sharing. PDR data can also be viewed in Cosworth's Toolbox software, which offers diverse and deep analysis of the different layers. This technology is similar to black box technology, even though there are no common characteristics between these two.

Drivers can record, store and view their drive experiences later on. Information collected here, can be used effectively to enhance lap time and speed while helping race car drivers adjust to various track and weather conditions. PDR will be available as standard on all variants of the Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray although pricing is yet to be announced. Chevrolet did not confirm its official launch outside America and we are waiting for official word to come in.

This could be an important addition for people who love to head out for long weekend drives as your drive history will be saved for future reference. Production cars will benefit from this technology although Chevrolet confirms official launch fall 2015. Vehicles should head into production by the second quarter of 2014. We were fairly enthralled with Chevrolet's innovative ideas and if you want to know more about PDR technology, come back soon as we will be back with latest news and updates.
