CES 2015 To See BMW's Innovations For Autonomous Cars
|   Sunday, January 04, 2015
At the upcoming CES 2015 (January 6 to 9, Las Vegas), BMW will demonstrate a range of amenities including the possibility of driving without any collisions as part of their take on autonomous cars.

Since the 2014 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), BMW has made a spectacular demonstration of how driving pleasure is reflected in autonomous driving: a BMW 2 Series Coupe has moved into a particularly sporty style which drifts on the circuit in a completely autonomous way.

Innovative sensors will allow BMW to demonstrate a number of facilities at CES 2015 (January 6 to 9, Las Vegas), including the possibility of driving without any collisions. This development represents a new standard defined by BMW Group specialists on the way to individual mobility without any accidents - with the driver, but also in fully automatic mode, unmanned.

Four advanced laser scanners record the environment and accurately identify obstacles, such as columns, for example, in a multi-storey car park. If the car is approaching too fast into a wall or column, the system automatically brakes to prevent a collision. With precision and backup space, the car is completely stopped. If the driver turns to avoid the obstacle or changes direction, the system releases the brake. This system supports the driver in an environment with limited visibility and is a further contribution to improving safety and comfort. Like all BMW Assist systems, the intervention of the driver disables system intervention.

Parking fully automatic in such an environment can be dynamic and safe even without a driver on a fully autonomous system. The Remote Valet Parking Assistant from BMW's i3 research combines information from laser scanners with a digital map to park for example, in a multi-storey car park. If the driver uses the SmartWatch to activate the Remote Valet Parking Assistant, the system will steer the vehicle independently through different floors while the driver is already out of the car and heading for business meetings.

The Remote Valet Parking Assistant fully and automatically recognizes structural features of parking and certainly turns around obstacles that can arise unexpectedly - such as cars parked illegally. When the BMW i3 reaches the parking lot, the car turns itself off and waits to be called via SmartWatch and voice command. Thereafter, the Remote Valet Parking Assistant automatically calculates the exact time when the driver arrives to the car, and the BMW i3 starts so as to arrive at the parking exit at the right time.

Assistance systems increase safety and comfort in traffic, even if they have different degree of support for the driver. The highest level of automation is offered by fully automated support systems.

Driving functions are considered to be fully automated if they are not monitored by the driver. This is true especially if it is not necessary to have the driver in the car at all – just like the fully automatic Remote Valet Parking Assistant does.

Fully automatic driving predecessors are advanced automated systems, which don't need to be monitored all the time by the driver. They take over linear direction (forward and backward movement) and transverse (sideways movement using the steering wheel) of the vehicle.

In contrast to fully automated systems, partially automated systems take control of the linear and transverse direction (such as Traffic Jam Assistant, launched by BMW 5 Series facelift, and gradually extended to the entire range of models including BMW Active Tourer 2) but must be continuously monitored by the driver.
Also note that assisted systems (such as autopilot with start-stop function) provide help only in maneuvering the throttle / brake.
