Car Makers Struggling to Shed the Car Fat
|   Tuesday, June 19, 2012
People all over the world have been rather obsessed about attending to their obesity problems while the car makers are struggling to tackle the car obesity issues. Each automobile manufacturer is busy hiring a team of designers who can creatively engineer the car by means of carbon fiber and aluminium.

While people are busy dieting, a report states that in the United States of America alone, about a third of the people are estimated to be obese.
The car manufacturers are also bogged down with identical problems pertaining to their cars. In the last thirty to forty years, a typical car has put on an extra hundred pounds as per the data accumulated by the auto industry. Cars have grown larger for the sake of additional features of comfort and convenience.

Today, engineers have a problem on hand of how to reduce all that car fat. They are being probed with questions mainly because of the issue of fuel economy. The general calculation rule in the car industry is that one hundred pounds would be equivalent to the ratio of a mile a gallon. The car manufacturers have been given tough economic mandates on new fuel economy standards and it is now rather important for them to tackle the car fat problem.

As a case in example, the new XTS Cadillac had to go through fat shedding, something on the lines of a liposuction recently. Now, it is weighing less by about a hundred pounds. This was mainly possible due to some ingenuous engineering work through the utilization of new and powerful steel alloys.

Porsche attended to its seventh generation 911 sports model and was successful in slashing off about a hundred pounds off the old version through the introduction of aluminium and carbon fiber. The Boxster, in its latest edition, is also expected to go through the same kind of weight reduction.

The latest Nissan Altima is also about eighty pounds lighter than the old version sedan. For Nissan, it was not an easy process. The engineers had to go through much stress and they were drained after an intense period of concentration on almost each element of the new design for Altima. They even had to modify the engineering features in connection with the continuously variable transmission. The new Altima was made to switch to aluminium of light weight quality for its hood and trunk. This will reflect on the fuel efficiency as the 2013 Altima is likely to be rated at thirty eight miles per gallon on the highway.

It is probably going to do better than its rivals like the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Cruze without charging the consumers that additional premium price. Nissan did a lot of product planning for this Altima project. It was a major issue to cut down the mass from the old Altima. Apart from the mass reduction, refinement was done on the aerodynamics and the power train too.

It has become mandatory for each car maker to lay stress on cutting down the weight of the new cars. Ford Motor Company has also announced that it is targeting a trim of as much as seven hundred and fifty pounds off the weight of its average production car.

General Motors had once reported that even that tiny Compact Disc changer which is built into the dashboard weighs around a mass of five pounds at least. The mindset of the people, though, is not changing to less bulky cars. Many consumers still associate luxury with size. They anticipate more features and safety equipment with the introduction of each new model.
