Cadillac Mounts On Future Luxury Sedan Video Camera That Replaces Traditional Rearview Mirror

Cadillac wants to stand out in the technology fight between its future CT6 and Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series. Therefore, the display that takes place of the central rearview mirror is just one of the steps to do that.

Cadillac has officially announced that the future CT6 in the American brand's premium range, and the German trio's Mercedes S-Class, BMW Series 7 and Audi A8 direct rival, will receive as standard a rearview screen, replacing the classical central mirror.
The display will take HD pictures from a camera behind the car and will send them to the display, a fact which people at Cadillac say has a lot of advantages compared to a conventional mirror.

According to officials, the range of the camera will provide a field of view four times wider than conventional mirrors visibility and is similar to that offered by a convertible with the top down. Also, the angle will not be blocked by pillars, seats or headrests, as happens in any other car. Moreover, the blind spot is also disposed of.

Obviously, Cadillac has solved the great problem of cameras mounted behind the car, namely dirty lens, by applying a hydrophobic coating that prevents water and dirt to adhere to the special glass covering the camera.

"The closest comparison to this kind of rear vision would be driving a convertible with the top down. In addition to the increased field of view, the technology eliminates any rear seat, rear pillar or passenger obstructions, allowing the driver an unimpeded view of the lanes behind and traditional blind-spots," says Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer, Travis Hester.

In a GM press release it's said that "Thanks to a high dynamic range, the camera's video feed reduces glare and allows a crisper image in low-light situations, versus a traditional glass electrochromatic or auto-dimming, rearview mirror. The in-mirror display is an industry-leading 1280 by 240-pixel TFT-LCD display with 171 pixels per inch, combined with a HD camera designed specifically to enhance rear view lane width and maximize low-light situations. A water-shedding hydrophobic coating is applied to the camera to keep it clean to maintain visibility regardless of the driving conditions."

On this Cadillac innovation, researchers and engineers have been granted 10 patents – one for the video mirror streaming and nine for video processing. The patents cover innovations in the wide field of view camera image calibration, de-warping, glare reduction plus camera hardware design.

The big sedan will serve as Cadillac's newest flagship model and will have a variety of other technological innovations. That includes a Caddy system called SuperDrive, which will allow hands-free motoring on limited-access highways – a major step towards fully autonomous vehicles.

Among other technological novelties implemented in the Cadillac CT6, we have a Bose audio system with speakers, embedded in the floor of the car, for a perfect multi-dimensional experience, and a multimedia package and connectivity dedicated to the rear seat passengers, a premiere on a production car.

The next big step will be to replace the conventional exterior mirrors. This idea was used by numerous concept vehicles in recent times. However, only with new video technology has this become increasingly viable.
