British Approve Of Testing Autonomous Cars On Public Roads
|   Thursday, February 26, 2015
UK Ministry of Transport approved of testing autonomous vehicles on public roads beginning with the summer of this year.

The British will encourage technology development and investment in the automotive industry, the latter having seen a doubling of production and sales volumes in the last decade. The English will invest 19 million pounds in four cities to enable the development of this technology under real conditions. This tech is expected to dramatically reduce deaths and injuries caused by road accidents worldwide.
The authorities had one condition: the autonomous vehicles that will be tested on public roads must necessarily have at all times a driver in front of the steering wheel able to take control at any time.

The approval came from the UK Ministry of Transport which conducted an analysis of the legislation behind and it has decreed that there is no legal impediment to this technology that will be tested by car manufacturers on the public roads. The legislators are already working on a code of practice for the driverless cars which will be published in spring this year. Based on this code of practice tests on public roads with autonomous cars will be carried out starting this summer.

The British estimated that driverless cars will be popular within ten years, when their industry will have important revenues. The car manufacturers from the premium segment were the first to have addressed this technology in different forms, but the software giant Google has made a surprise appearance in the field with a prototype of an autonomous vehicle that has no conventional control driving. Audi is preparing an A8 model able to drive by itself at speed of up to 60 km / h.

"Driverless cars are the future. I want Britain to be at the forefront of this exciting new development, to embrace a technology that could transform our roads and open up a brand new route for global investment. These are still early days, but today is an important step. The trials present a fantastic opportunity for this country to take a lead internationally in the development of this new technology" said Transport Minister Claire Perry.

Around the world, the autonomous car industry is expected to grow to a value of about 900 billion pounds (1,370 billion dollars) by 2025, according to what the UK government announced. Also, it will be a situation where carmakers like Daimler struggle with technology companies such as Google.

"The UK is at the cutting edge of automotive technology - from the all-electric cars built in Sunderland, to the formula 1 expertise in the Midlands. It's important for jobs, growth and society that we keep at the forefront of innovation, that's why I launched a competition to research and develop driverless cars. The projects we are now funding in Greenwich, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Coventry will help to ensure we are world-leaders in this field and able to benefit from what is expected to be a £900 billion industry by 2025. The government's industrial strategy is backing the automotive sector as it goes from strength to strength, we are giving business the confidence to invest over the long term and developing cutting-edge technology that will create high skilled jobs." declared Business Secretary Vince Cable.
