Bosch To Launch New Lithium-Ion Batteries Generation With Double The Storage Capacity

Long lifetime, high quality, the highest level of safety - we have great expectations from automotive high voltage batteries. It is also why at present lithium-ion batteries are designed for a range of at least 150,000 km and a lifetime of up to 15 years. Even after spending such a long period in the vehicle, the battery must keep 80 percent of its performance and storage capacity of the original.

In the next five years Bosch wants to supply high-voltage batteries that are twice as strong.
The company is also exploring new technologies for batteries.

Lithium-ion technology has much to offer in the years ahead. The batteries currently on the market have an energy density of about 115 W h / kg, but can reach up to 280 W h / kg. To do research on lithium-ion batteries Bosch has joined forces with GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi Corporation in a joint venture with the name Lithium Energy and Power.

The three partners have joined forces to achieve a common goal. GS Yuasa can use its experience in optimizing battery cells to create higher energy density and range. Bosch contributes with its experience in complex batteries and systems integration management.

The activity of Bosch's research department focuses on the following product, which will follow lithium-ion batteries, such as those using lithium-sulfur technology which promises increased energy density and capacity. Bosch estimates that the lithium-sulfur battery will enter into series production sometime near the middle of the next decade.

There are several ways in which you can increase battery performance. For example, the material used for the anode and the cathode plays an important role in cell chemistry. The majority of currently existing cathodes are made of nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-carboxyanhydride (NCA), while the anodes are made of graphite, soft or hard carbon or silicon carbide.

High voltage electrolytes can increase the performance of the battery, increasing the cell voltage from 4.5 to 5 V. The technical challenge is to ensure a high level of safety and a long service life, while improving battery performance. Sophisticated battery management can increase by up to 10 percent a vehicle's range - without altering the cell chemistry.

A vehicle that is part of a fleet goes through a large number of kilometers in a short period of time, and requires a new battery for better performance and capacity. Instead, a slightly worn battery can be used to run cars occasionally over short distances.

This would reduce the total cost of an electric vehicle. Even after 12 years - the average duration of use of an electric vehicle - the battery still retains 80 percent of the storage capacity and performance it originally had. Therefore, its components can be used, for example, as energy storage unit.

In Hamburg, worn accumulators from electric vehicles are joined to create a huge energy storage system. It can supply electricity in a few seconds and helps stabilize the network. Bosch, BMW Group and Vattenfall have joined forces in this project to move to the next level in terms of electromobility and energy storage.
