Bosch Evaluates Driver Assistance Systems
|   Thursday, October 23, 2014
Driver assistance systems can save lives and have already done so. Sometimes it is enough that the car to beep warnings and display a coffee cup on the dashboard to alert the driver to take a break.

Bosch's assessment relating to these systems looks at some of the most important vehicle models in each segment and shows that about 680,000 - almost a quarter - of the 2.95 million newly registered cars last year in Germany can warn tired drivers before that they cause an accident.
Thus, the sleepiness detection function is the most common driver assistance systems installed in new cars. The assessment was based on new cars registered in 2013 statistics in Germany.

Sleepiness, decreased concentration, and fatigue while driving, are extremely dangerous and are the cause of many accidents. However, initial signs can be detected in time: tired drivers make less accurate steering maneuvers and need to often make small trajectory corrections. The Bosch sleepiness detection system constantly analyzes steering maneuvers performed by the driver by means of a steering wheel angle sensor or electric power steering to identify typical signs of fatigue.

The system records the slight or sudden movements of the steering wheel. Using other parameters (such as the driving time, and time of day), the system can detect signs announcing fatigue, emitting visual and audible signals to alert the driver that it is time to pause before he dozes at the wheel. 23 percent of new cars in 2013 were equipped with such a system.

The purpose of equipping a vehicle with an intelligent headlight control is to see and be seen better. When driving at night or in a tunnel, the Assistant enables or disables the low beam headlamps as required. The system also enables high beam when it does not detect any vehicle ahead or moving from the opposite direction (unless the vehicle is moving in localities). In addition, the intelligent headlight control system can adjust the headlights constantly depending on the road, or continually switch between low beam and high beam. Therefore, the system ensures optimal illumination without causing undue dazzle to other participants in traffic. 20 percent of new cars in 2013 were equipped with intelligent headlight control system.

Rear-end collisions are among the most serious accidents, especially those involving pedestrians or cyclists. An automatic emergency braking system can prevent these accidents or at least mitigate their consequences. To detect a possible obstacle, the assistant prepares the brake system for emergency stop and automatically initiates emergency braking if the driver does not react.

Motor vehicles wishing to obtain the maximum 5-star EuroNCAP score must be equipped from 2016 with this system of pedestrian preventive protection. The advantages of this system have already been proven: up to 72 percent of rear-end collisions produced in Germany and resulting injuries could be avoided if vehicles were equipped with an automatic emergency braking system. In 2013, this system was installed on 11 percent of new cars.

Through the development of ABS and ESP systems, the company has provided the conditions for considerably reducing the number of accidents. ESP is the technology that underpins the vision of fully automatic driving. The car uses sensors to gradually learn how to "see" and perceive the environment. Bosch provides for many years the radar and video sensors needed in this regard. Finally, powerful computers allow for assistance systems to respond fast and to think like an experienced driver.
