Bosch Designs a Hybrid Aston Martin DB9
|   Friday, June 21, 2013
Engineers at Bosch Engineering have come up with a hybrid plug in version of the Aston Martin DB9. This vehicle is capable of saving a lot of fuel while maintaining low levels of CO2 emission. Performance and drive dynamics levels have also gone up as compared to the standard version of the vehicle. The engineers have fitted dual electric motors to the vehicle, one each to the front and rear axle.

This car features traction control, unable torque vectoring, pedal feel and a rear wheel drive platform.
The experiment was conducted on a donor DB9 and features a third electric motor on the engine compartment. Engineers at Bosch feel that the latest designing component and introduction of the electrical power train enhances the efficiency and performing ability of the original DB9. Electrification enhances the power displacement from the engine to the axle which translates into better response every time you step on the accelerator.

The modifications add a 180 kW lithium ion battery along with control modules. The total modifications add a hefty 300 kg to the already bulked up body of the DB9, taking the overall dry weight up to 2085 kg. The motor also displaces 200 BHP more than the original displacing capability of the standard engine and the acceleration time from 0 – 60 MPH will be reduced from 4.6 seconds to 4.0 seconds flat.

The hybrid DB9 can travel up to 20 Miles solely on electric power and this enhances the fuel efficiency while cutting down on CO2 emissions. The hybrid drive train has been designed in such a manner that it may be used in future on other models too. Engineers at Bosch say that sports cars in future will not be able to fulfill emission norms if not for hybrid technologies such as these.

Engineers claim that there is currently no plan for production although the company may plan on bringing this model into production soon. This project is very important for Aston Martin as they want to introduce a hybrid drive train into their lineup. Aston Martin has received considerable amount of success in the Rapide S hybridization experiment and they want to expand their available range of lineups for better market orientation.

The advantages of using the new plug in hybrid technology from Bosch are high and the top officials are considering bringing this model into the production stages. Talks are on and final announcements are expected shortly. Even if this car is brought to production, most of the original components are expected to stay as the design in close to perfection.

Not much on the exterior has been changed although the mechanical components have received a major modification. The power to weight ratio has been maintained even though extra weight was added to the vehicle and acceleration is one of the strong points of this car. This is a potent sports car and is also usable around the track. Aston Martin could also consider using this power train for their track ambitions.
