Bosch CES 2016 Central Theme - The Autonomous Car
|   Saturday, January 23, 2016
Bosch appeared at CES 2016 in Las Vegas with a number of functions and connected assistance systems for automobiles. The largest manufacturer of components for the automotive industry joins the growing group of automakers that offer intelligent solutions for autonomous driving.

Also, Bosch shows how effective is the operation of these systems, with which driver distraction is kept to a minimum. CES organizers have granted Bosch a prize for the most recent product developed, a touch screen which generates the feeling of the real buttons through haptic feedback.

This device generates different surface textures enabling perception of tactile elements on the display. This type of haptic feedback enables operation of infotainment applications such as navigation, radio and mobile smart phone functions. Often, drivers will not need to look at the information on the screen to maneuver, thus being able to concentrate on the road. The display generates the sensation of hard surfaces, smooth and with certain patterns to indicate different functions and buttons. To make a selection, the button must be pressed firmly. What makes this feature special it is that the touch screen does not look different from a normal screen, however, it grants the user the impression of pressing real buttons.

Connectivity means that information for the driver is more updated than ever. This is especially important regarding drivers who drive on oncoming lanes. In general, it takes several minutes for radio stations to issue warnings over the airwaves, but one-third of incidents caused by driving counter end after only 500 meters. Bosch is currently developing a new type of warning regarding drivers who are driving on oncoming lanes based on cloud technology, which give drivers a danger warning ten seconds after the incident occurred.
Having a simple form of a software module can be integrated, with low costs, into a smart phone app, such as Bosch myDriveAssist application or on the current infotainment systems.

To detect oncoming traffic direction, the function based on cloud technology compares the actual anonymized motion of the vehicles on the highways with the allowed direction of travel. If there is a discrepancy, drivers who are driving counter are alerted to their error in seconds. Meanwhile, nearby cars which move in the opposite direction are warned of the danger. Starting in 2016, the new feature will be available as a cloud service.

Driving with a high level of automation will further enhance the traffic safety on the road. This innovation will operate on highways from 2020.
According to Bosch researchers forecasts regarding road accidents increased automation can significantly reduce the number of accidents - by up to a third in Germany alone.

At CES 2016 Bosch presented sensors and systems required for automated traveling, integrated in another vehicle for demonstrations at the Sands Expo. Visitors learned how the Highway Pilot worked, a highly automated system that takes on all the driver's tasks and responsibilities when on the highway. This technology is already being tested on the public roads.
