BMW's New 5 Series Production Gets Green Light
|   Monday, October 24, 2016
The seventh Generation BMW 5 Series will be built at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Lower Bavaria. The production of the new 5 Series Sedan will start before the end of the year and will be ready for market launch in early 2017.

In preparation for the new model the plant from Dingolfing has undergone in recent months a long process of renovation and construction. Several hundred million euros have been invested in measures that include a new chassis workshop in the western part of the plant and restructuring the powertrain plant in the automobile assembly department.

Besides the production of all BMW 7 Series and BMW 6 Series models the location will continue to produce all variants for the new BMW 5 Series and will be the main factory for the international 5 Series production network.

The integration of new BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 models means that the production volumes of the BMW plant in Dingolfing have increased significantly. Consequently, the factory now produces about 350,000 cars per year. However, as a result of this successful growth, the plant can no longer provide by itself the expected volumes. In spite of that the BMW 5 Series will be produced predominantly in Dingolfing.

For the first time, additional units of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be produced under contract with the Austrian manufacturer, Magna Steyr AG & Co. KG, at its plant in Graz.

The BMW 5 Series Sedan is the second BMW model which will be produced under contract by the Austrian manufacturer; the first was the BMW X3 which was produced by Magna Steyr between 2003 and 2010. Currently, Magna Steyr produces the MINI Countryman and MINI Paceman for the BMW Group too.
The production of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will begin at the end of this year in the main plant from Dingolfing and at Magna Steyr in Graz in early 2017.

The plant in Dingolfing is one of the 31 production sites that the BMW Group has worldwide. Every day about 1,600 cars belonging to the BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series leave the plant’s assembly line. In 2015 the plant produced a total of over 360,000 cars. Currently the plant in Dingolfing has a workforce of approximately 17,500 employees, including 800 apprentices.

Besides the main production of automobiles, auto parts, such as seats and pressed parts, as well as chassis and drivetrains are also produced at this plant.
Due to its experience in processing aluminum and years of experience in the production of alternative transmissions, BMW‘s Dingolfing plant provides the plant in Leipzig the main components for the new BMW i, such as high voltage battery, electric drives and structures and produces high voltage batteries and electric motors for the group’s hybrid plug-in models.

On top of that, this is also where they make the base chassis for all Rolls-Royce models. “Dynamic Centre” is a point of transit and large storage and provides worldwide original BMW parts and accessories for the BMW and MINI retail organizations.
