BMW X5 40e: Brand's First Plug-In Hybrid Come With 313 HP
|   Sunday, March 29, 2015
The BMW X5 was chosen as the perfect platform for the first series plug-in hybrid in the history of the German brand. The new motorization version is called xDrive40e and promises to provide sportiness, efficiency, and space for passengers and their luggage in one package.

Total power of plug-in hybrid model is 313 hp while the NEDC combined fuel consumption cycle for plug-in hybrids is 3.3-3.4 liters per 100 km, available for the first hundred kilometers.
The rationale behind that statement is related to the way in which fuel consumption is calculated for this category of vehicles in the NEDC cycle, being taken into consideration only the first hundred kilometers.

On the aesthetic level, the plug-in hybrid version of X5 is not as easily recognized by untrained eye as is the case of hybrid variants of other BMW models, but the charging port located on the front left wing is the first thing which betrays what is hiding under the body of the X5 xDrive40e. The front bumper, alloy wheels, side skirts and rear bumper, also have a different design from that found on the standard versions of the X5.

The ornaments in the lower parts of the bumpers and side skirts, sit well with the X5 and the rims are specially designed to improve the aerodynamic coefficient and shows.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e has permanent four-wheel drive, and it leaves the factory with a Steptronic automatic transmission with eight steps. The propulsion system of this model consists of a 2.0 turbo engine with four in line cylinders, gasoline powered, assisted by an electric motor. Like many other plug-in hybrids the X5 xDrive40e can run significant distances in 100 percent electric mode.

Those at BMW say a short trip in urban areas up to 25 kilometers can be achieved without the internal combustion engine turning on. In such cases, the fuel consumption varies between zero and 3.0 liters per 100 km.

The motorization on the BMW X5 xDrive40e is the 2.0 TwinPower Turbo rated at 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The unit is supported by an electric motor of 113 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The maximum total power of the system is 313 hp, according to officials in the German company. Like many other models of this type, the performances of the motors are not accumulated when providing the maximum power of the system.

With regards to the electric system performance, BMW announced a top speed electronically limited to 120 km / h, for 100 percent electric mode. The hybrid version of the X5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km / h, electronically limited to preserve autonomy.

At a technological level, BMW offers similar equipment with the stuff found on comparable models equipped only an internal combustion unit. Therefore, the SAV plug-in hybrid from Munich offers a competitive technology package. In addition to all that, the X5 xDrive40e benefits from a chassis and suspension with specific settings, adaptive shock absorbers, and self adjusting pneumatic rear suspension.
