BMW X1 gets FWD in the year 2015

A second generation of BMW X1 is due to be officially unveiled in June next year, and then go quickly into sales after that. As an effort to cut down manufacturing costs, BMW is developing second generation X1 as a joint engineering programme along with its X2. A second generation Mini Countryman and Clubman are also part of this joint engineering project.

A UKL1 platform is being used to develop second generation X1, and this platform is shared by all the other models which are a part of the joint engineering programme.
Not only the platform is shared, but also the chassis, electric systems and even drivelines are being shared.

This platform is already in use in 2 series Active Tourer and Mini hatchback. Its promising performance prompted BMW officials to extend its use in this joint engineering project as well. Along with that, X1 is also going o get Front Wheel Drive, so you can expect easy steering and smoother ride. However, traction might be a bit low.

All these changes have been made, and the joint project has been started keeping in mind the financial benefits that BMW may cultivate out of this. It considerably decreases production costs and thus increases profitability. Also, it gives the company an edge over all other rival brands.

Longitudinal engine alignment is a thing of past for BMW. They have moved on to transverse engine layout. This saves a huge amount of space and is well compatible with all wheel drive and front wheel drive, because both will be available in at least one of the many cars in this project.

There has been interesting design changes as well. From inside sources, it has been confirmed that there is going to be a shortened front end and the additional slope moves to rear. Windscreen has been pulled forward and overall ambience is that of a small estate. So it has more powerful and dynamic design than first generation.

This is an entry level SUV for BMW. It will still be a five door SUV. It will still have five seats and also a conventional tailgate. However, smaller dimensions make it more compact without compromising on space.

An added advantage of this car over its rivals is going to be its price. While other similar models are way too pricey, this comes well within an affordable range. So there is a good chance that new customers are going to be attracted to second generation X1.

For some of the world markets, BMW has planned some separate design changes. There might be a third row of seat added to make it a seven seater. A bit of change in dimensions will be made as well to facilitate these changes.

There are going to be a wide variety of engines, with a wide range of capacities and horsepower. Most of them are going to be four cylinder engines ad horsepower ranges between 114 bhp and 231 bhp. Both petrol as well as diesel variants might be present.
