BMW Working On New Propulsion Technologies
|   Sunday, December 14, 2014
Alternative propulsion systems are gaining ground fast and right now BMW has increased its emphasis in that field by focusing on the Power eDrive and TwinPower Turbo, which is the future BMW Series 3 plug-in hybrid propulsion system. This will mark the electrification of the most successful premium sedan in the world.

The recently launched BMW i3 and i8 open new territory in terms of full electric propulsion and plug-in hybrid solutions. The BMW eDrive technology promotes the driving pleasure characteristic of the brand while providing a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions - up to zero when running in full electric mode.
This is the natural evolution of the BMW Efficient Dynamics strategy.

For over 15 years, the Efficient Dynamics strategy has inspired and formed the development of new models in all BMW Group brands, resulting in the production of highly efficient cars that combine dynamic performance with intelligent energy management. Currently, through Efficient Dynamics BMW and MINI are offering premium models that impose standards in their segments in terms of exceptional balance between performance and fuel consumption. No other manufacturer has seen a reduction so fast and significant in CO2 emissions as the BMW Group achieved.

Last year at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) 2013 plug-in hybrid technology was presented along with the BMW X5 Concept eDrive. It was the first time a plug-in hybrid system was combined with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The result was a Sports Activity Vehicle that combines sportiness with efficiency, superior traction and versatility and carrying out the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in less than seven seconds. Also, the BMW X5 Concept eDrive has a range in electric mode of up to 30 kilometers. Its fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is approximately 3.8 l / 100 km and CO2 emissions are around 90 g / km - new standards in this class of car.

By combining a petrol engine with four cylinders and TwinPower Turbo technology in the new range of Efficient Dynamics engine with an electromotor the BMW 3 Series plug-in hybrid prototype offers sporty performance standards on a par with those of a BMW 3 Series equipped with a conventional engine with six cylinders, and a significant reduction in consumption.

The plug-in hybrid propulsion system has a combined power of about 245 hp and combined torque of about 400 Nm. Because of this, along with additional acceleration provided by the electric boost function, daily driving enjoys a very dynamic side. Average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are approximately 2 l / 100 km respectively 50 g / km. In electric only mode, the prototype is capable of a top speed of 120 km / h and has a range of approximately 35 kilometers.

For these future plug-in hybrid concepts, the electromotor, which will be the main source of power for everyday driving, will continue to operate the rear wheels, while adding a second electric motor - for driving the front wheels - will create a full-electric propulsion. At the same time, the internal combustion engine will also provide power to the front axle.
