BMW wins the crown for designing the most fuel efficient cars in 2012

BMW has reached another milestone with the high end BMW 530d model. The vehicle has won the O level in the total economy run competition, while the entry level sibling of the 530d, the 120d, has managed to win the M level at the same competition. The 120d has been introduced in the market for just 9 months and it has managed to win this prestigious award already.

The 2012 edition of the total economy run competition took place in Mpumalanga, White River, South Africa and is considered to be only trust worthy fuel test competition in the country.
The competition has been taking place for the past 36 years and this was the first time one car maker has won in both the categories.

Competition was no doubt tough in all the segments and the BMW 530d competed with three other vehicles for the top spot. The recorded fuel economy of the 530d was marked at 6.6 L / 100km, which is quite impressive considering the massive size of the engine.

The BMW 120d on the other hand also competed with three other vehicles in the class to record a maximum of 5.2 L / 100 km. Owing to its performance and turbo diesel engine, the BMW 530d was crowned as the winner of the South African Society of Automobile Journalists in 2011.
The BMW 530d is powered by a massive 3.0 L turbo diesel engine and power developed by it is close to 180 kW with maximum torque figures of 540 NM. Needless to say, with the induction of this massive engine in the 530d, the car accelerates to 100 km/h from 0 km/h in just 6.3 seconds. With a top speed of 250 km/h, the BMW 530d is one of the fastest vehicles in the category.

The 530d utilizes BMW's efficient dynamics technology as well as an all new 8 speed automatic transmission. Some of the other technology used in the 530d is the on demand functioning of the engine dynamics and the all new Brake Energy Renewal system.

On the other hand, the BMW 120d is powered by a much smaller 2.0 L twin turbo engine. This engine produces decent power output of 135 kW and 380 Nm torque, which produces enough power to propel the 120d. With a top speed of 228 km/h, the BMW 120d accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h in less than 7.2 seconds.

BMW has a secret behind their high performance vehicles and that is the induction of the twin power, twin turbo engine. The lightweight body structure and the designing pattern also play an important part in the high fuel economy of the vehicles.

The all new BMW efficient dynamics enhances the power output from the engines and extracts maximum power from the engines. BMW has class leading emission rate and the recently included green technology is being implanted in all BMW vehicles.

The average BMW vehicles have an average emission rate of 156 g/km, which is considerably low in this segment. In fact, many small cars have higher figures than this.
