BMW to reveal the designs of the Z2 at the Detroit Motor Show
|   Thursday, January 17, 2013
BMW is currently working on a sleek and mean looking, a front wheel drive roadster that will give the company a whole new dimension into the automotive world. The roadster, termed the Z2 is expected to be totally different from what BMW has to offer at the moment and the initial designs of the vehicle is expected to be showcased at the Detroit Auto Show along with different models from BMW, the company insiders gave away.

BMW is keen to build up a different image for itself and the Z2 is the company's bet on a new range of products that is set to take the market up by storm within the next few years.
BMW will introduce the Z2 as the entry level vehicle and the vehicles will be available with front wheel drive and all wheel drive options.

The Z2 could sport a price tag as low as £15,000, although this is not a confirmed fact. This low price tag could be possible as the Z2 is one amongst the 23 vehicles from BMW / MINI that will be based on the company's new UKL1 platform, which has already started receiving accolades from around the globe.

BMW wanted to make a car that will be affordable as well as carry along the spirit of the original Z3 and this is how the Z2 was born. The front wheel drive platform was originally brought into production to save cost of production and the Z Series vehicles usually follow this drive train pattern. The Z2 has been placed in the segment just below the Z4 and as a result people opting for the Z2 will actually get a chance to own a part of the technology used in the Z4.

The Z2 has also been strategically placed in the segment which counters the Mazda MX 5 and a limited number of petrol options are also being made available which is expected to seal the fortune of the MX 5. It is still early to comment on the Z2's drive train. However MINI is working on a coupe / roadster based on the same technology, which could be out on the streets by 2017.

The Z2 could feature similar dimensions as that of the Z3 and its wheelbase is expected to be close to 4000 x 1700 x 250 mm in length / breadth / height. Unlike its older cousin, the Z4, the Z2 is expected to feature a fabricated hood which promises to keep the weight of the vehicle in check.

BMW was known for its rear and all wheel drive vehicles and the move to the front wheel drive platform is a revolutionary step for the legendary car makers. BMW was skeptical about front wheel drive vehicles performing on road. However this conception was first broken with the front wheel drive vehicles from MINI doing well in the market. This is a crucial time for BMW to make smart marketing moves as with the change in generation, the company needs to cater to the needs of the younger generation too.
