BMW Set to Roll out New 3 Series Models Fall July 2013
|   Thursday, February 14, 2013
The new addition to the BMW 3 Series has been made and this is the first car to be added to their lineup, post the Compact since 1993. The new entrant is based on the BMW 5 Series GT and is longer, taller and wider that any vehicle in the 3 Series. BMW claims that the new vehicle features the perfect balance between practicality and drivability and sports the shape of a coupe.

The all new 3 Series GT features five seats and will sport five distinct engine options.
The general dimensions have been increased by 200mm x 17 mm x 79 mm (length x breadth x height) and the final figures are 4824 mm x 1828 mm x 1508 mm (length x breadth x height). The wheelbase has also been increased by 110 mm and currently stands at 2920 mm.

The increase in the dimensions makes the vehicle more spacious than any of the other 3 Series coupes and the rear passenger seat spacing is more than that of a general 5 Series sedan. An electric tailgate is also available as standard. Though the 3 Series GT is high on space, the designing has been done carefully and this makes the vehicle quite sleek as compared to the bulky 5 Series.

Frameless doors, single sloping roofline and an additional automatic rear wing spoiler which operates post 68 MPH are the major addition of the new 3 Series GT. Most other features have been carried over from the general 3 Series sedans and coupe. Increase in basic dimensions also increases the boot space of 25 liters and the total space available is 520 liters. The loading area is illuminated with LED and this makes the 1600 liter area stand out in the vehicle.

The driver's seat has been increased by 59 mm and this enhances road visibility and driving efficiency. Three petrol engines have been added to the lineup – 335i, 328i and 320i – along with two diesel options – 320d and 318d. While the 320i features a 2.0 liter petrol engine displacing 181 BHP, the 328i sports a similar engine but displaces 242 BHP.

The engine is mated to an eight speed automatic transmission system while the 2.0 liter diesel engines on the 318d and the 320d displace 141 BHP and 181 BHP respectively. Combined fuel efficiency on the 3 Series GT is 57.6 MPG while CO2 emission has been checked at 129 g/km. Three trim levels are available on the 3 Series GT – Modern, Sport and Luxury – although a probable launch date has not been finalized as of yet.

The basic difference between the three models is in their ride heights, suspension settings and minor cosmetic changes. BMW claims that the vehicles will be officially unveiled fall July 2013, detailed reports and road test figures have not been unveiled. Last minute upgrades are being made to the 3 Series GT models and BMW plans on capturing a chunk of the world market share with the launch of these vehicles.
