BMW Reveals 425 BHP Displacing M4 Convertible at the New York Motor Show
|   Thursday, April 24, 2014
The 2014 New York Motor Show has quite a few interesting vehicles up for launch, although the one car that has really caught our fancy, is the 425 BHP displacing BMW M4 Convertible. Any M Series vehicle from BMW is a treat – both visually and performance wise – and if that vehicle happens to be an open top, need we explain more? Expected to be available across the United Kingdom fall September 2014, the M4 Convertible is based on its Coupe variant, showcased at Detroit back in January.

Base prices for this vehicle start at £60,730, while its predecessor – the M3 Cabriolet – featured a price tag of £59,040 when it went out of production back in end 2013. The M4 is based entirely on the 4 Series, although a fair amount of modifications were done to it in order to give it a new leash of life.

Traditional styling upgrades were done on this vehicle, including a heavily modified front end, complete with larger air intake ducts. Heavily structured front end, complete with a larger engine, brakes, fenders and a heavily contoured bonnet are its standard additions. Airflow is managed around the sculptured body panels, while ride height has been lowered to reduce body roll till a certain level.

This vehicle feels surprisingly stable around corners, even at high speeds, while 19 inch rims are part of its standard kit, which is headed into UK. Measuring 4670 mm x 1870 mm x 1386 mm (length x breadth x height) its wheelbase has been increased by a respectable 53 mm x 39 mm x 63 mm respectively. This in turn enhances interior space, which has been utilized well in providing appropriate head and leg room.

The roof structure can be folded up into three separate metal pieces, which folds up and opens up in three complete steps, at the simple push of a single button. This can be controlled till a maximum speed of 11 MPH. Boot capacities are recorded at 370 liters with its roof up and 220 liters with it folded.

These figures are 20 and 10 liters over their M3. M specific upgrades to this model include heated seats, Professional Media Package, USB and Bluetooth connectivity with front and rear parking sensors and cameras, along with folded mirrors. This vehicle draws power from the same old turbocharged 3.0 liter engine, powering current generation M3 and M4 Coupe. Its direct fuel injected engine block is manufactured at BMW's Munich plant, while these engines are capable of displacing 425 BHP along with 406 ft lb of torque.

A naturally aspirated 4.0 liter V8 engine block, lifted off the old M3, can also be found on this variant, while power displacement has been upgraded by 11 BHP along with 11 ft lb of torque. Its keenest rival is Audi's Rs5 Cabriolet, which draws power from a 4.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 engine block displacing 444 BHP along with 318 ft lb of torque. Stay tuned for additional information.
