BMW Presents Visionary - A Google Spotlight Story

BMW is the first automotive brand in the world that uses Google Spotlight Stories for an innovative way of storytelling. The result is a brand experience through 360° interactive virtual reality which is broadcast on YouTube.

"Visionary" provides a unique immersive experience of the BMW VISION NEXT 100 – a concept study developed for BMW's centenary in 2016.
With Google Spotlight Stories BMW allows automobile and technology fans to interactively explore BMW VISION NEXT 100 in a spectacular combination of product presentation and sophisticated mobile virtual reality.
The base is a 360° video presentation, which is extended through interactive elements. For now, users can enter this experience through the YouTube app for Android devices, as well as Google Spotlight Stories app for iOS and Android operating systems.

The revolutionary vehicle vision BMW VISION NEXT 100 demonstrates capacity for innovation and commitment from BMW's part to remain the main trainer of future mobility. This car combines the sportiness of a coupe with the dynamic elegance of a sedan - but only to be an anonymous transport car, otherwise it is a very personalized car which is perfectly suited for the changing needs of the driver. The interaction between driver and car is managed by Alive Geometry; Ease and Boost modes offer alternative operation to the driver, and inside the car changes according to the travel mode.
Google Spotlight Stories allows the telling of interactive mobile stories on devices iOS and Android apps with the same name, as well as Spotlight Stories Engine, which is included in the YouTube app for Android.

Google Spotlight Stories is a combination of Storytelling and mobile virtual reality. A function of 360° images give a smartphone a window into another world. Interactivity is provided by sensors included in smartphone (gyroscope, touch etc.). The user navigates through the video experience, and may explore additional subchapters and can activate other perspectives too.

Google Spotlight Stories is compatible with Google Cardboard. Once created, the same story applies to all iOS users in the Spotlight Story app and additionally for Android users through the YouTube app. For users of desktop and mobile web versions a 360° video without interactivity features will be offered as an alternative.

Max Lederer, director of Jung von Matt, the company working with BMW on this project, said that "Innovations require courage – without the trust that we were shown by the BMW Group, the groundbreaking work in creating ‘Visionary' wouldn't have been possible. For Jung von Matt this project has been as much a challenge as for the other parties involved. A team of specialists has worked its way through a whole new software, which was simultaneously developed further in Mountain View. Together with the great team of Google in Germany and in the US, a digital lighthouse project has been created, which in the opinion of Jung von Matt represents the future of mobile brand experience: interactive storytelling in the virtual space. The whole project was embedded within the BMW Group centenary campaign "THE NEXT 100 YEARS".
