BMW Preparing New Offensive Of Electric And Hybrid Cars
|   Tuesday, February 17, 2015
After launching a range of electric and plug-in hybrid models, those at BMW plan to adopt these technologies in their standard models in order to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

BMW will launch a technological offensive regarding electrification of all models larger than the BMW 3 Series from its portfolio by 2020, headline the British from Autocar. The first step of the plan is the design of all new models in order to reduce the total weight and to accommodate with the future electric or hybrid propulsion system.
To achieve this, BMW will use increasingly more composite materials and alloys for the future body, which will be lighter and more durable than the current units.

This progress will be for the benefit of future hybrid and electric models in the brand as well as for the models with conventional propulsion systems, which will have a lower weight, which in turn will ensure lower fuel consumption and increased performance.

The first BMW model that will benefit from the new type of bodywork will be the new generation of the BMW 7 Series, which we already know that it will be lighter than its predecessor. The first information about this model suggests a mixed structure of the body, which combines several types of steel, aluminum and different types of carbon fiber composites, assembled in different ways to achieve a higher level of strength and durability. The smallest BMW 3 Series sedan will benefit by this progress starting with 2018, when it is expected to see the launch of a new generation.

The future BMW models are expected to benefit from advanced hybrid systems, which are based on one or more electric motors for propulsion. The internal combustion engines will gradually assume the role of generators, transferring up the baton of the actual propulsion to the electric motors. Most likely, at least a hybrid version of every model in the BMW range greater than the BMW 1 Series will be launched by 2020, estimates a close BMW source cited by the British from Autocar.

According to the sources within BMW, the development department at BMW is working on new models which benefit from a better drag coefficient, in addition to improvements applied to the propulsion system. The current navigation system that can work in tandem with cruise control to prevent ascent and descent of the hills to reduce fuel consumption, will be updated to take full advantage of lowering for regenerative charging the electric batteries. This will be done without the driver even noticing it. Also, we can list in the department plans the suspension with adjustable ground clearance, depending on running speed, and active grille radiator, which close automatically at high speeds.

The strategy of BMW is to reduce the average CO2 emissions at brand level to the threshold of 95 grams CO2 per kilometer by 2020. Because the majority of sales volumes made by BMW are obtained thanks to larger cars than the BMW 1 Series models (about 75 percent of cars sold by the Germans), the manufacturer will focus on reducing CO2 emissions of these vehicles.

Without this improvement, the Germans are not expected to achieve the CO2 emission values specified by the European Commission for 2021.
