BMW Plans on Recalling 134,000 Units in North America and Canada
|   Monday, September 23, 2013
BMW has recalled close to 134,000 units of its mid ranged 5 Series sedans due to a technical glitch with the rear lamps of the vehicle. This lamp is concerned with collision detection; therefore, failure would mean failure to comply with the safety norms. This causes serious safety issues and hence BMW has decided not to take any chances with its vehicles. This is the second time this year that BMW had to recall vehicles due to some reason.

Earlier this year the company had to recall close to 500,000 units of its lower ranged sedan due to another technical glitch.
Even though the volumes this time are not as large as they were in the past, this is not good news for a premium German automaker such as BMW. This time, BMW has called back the 528i, 550i, 530i and the M5, sold during 2008 – 2010.

According to official Government safety reports, corrosion in the electrical portions of a car can lead to such faults, even though this is not expected off BMW. The company has a reputation to protect while its past records are quite clean. Hence, such trifle faults are not expected from BMW. Close to 15 percent of all accidents today are caused by faulty electronic warning systems and hence BMW could not risk taking a chance.

BMW had faced a range of problems with electronics in the past, although none were as serious as its current level of glitches. The company had to recall 241,000 units back in 2011 due to problems with its electronic connections back in 2011. BMW has however not seen any accidents due to this fault, although quite a few major accidents were recorded in BMW vehicles during its previous failure in 2011.

The faulty lamps are expected to be replaced fall October even though an expected finish line is yet to be announced. Car owners are requested to reach their nearest BMW dealership or authorized service center to get their vehicles enrolled for this transformation. Bookings are yet to be open and BMW will announce the dates by next week.

In February last year, BMW had to recall another high volume of Z4s and 3 Series for replacement. BMW is quite experienced with technical glitches plaguing the company although this is the first time this move has been taken in North America and Canada. Although reports of the recalling are mere speculations at the moment, based on insider reports and hints, official world should be out within the next 72 hours at the most.

BMW is currently working on its schedules and plans to accommodate this sudden but important event in its roster for the year. Even though this could hamper a few prospective projects within the upcoming years, its importance cannot be denied and hence the company is working hard to ensure that current owners are not dissatisfied with service and replacement. When you own a BMW, you own a piece of world class functionalities. The company does not want to ruin its official image.
