BMW Plans for launching the i3 in UK Later This Year
|   Wednesday, March 27, 2013
The BMW i3 had been taken for a test drive recently over snowy terrain and the vehicle proved to be a great handler on snow. BMW has introduced the I Series vehicles with additional traction control, stability control and other advanced technology, hence making this vehicle one of the safest on the road. Two distinct versions of the i3 are expected to go on sale by the end of the year and the first destination is more likely to be the United Kingdom.

The primary drive train on both the vehicles is similar to that of the BMW 1 Series Active E while the electric motor has been mounted at the rear end of the vehicle. The electric motor displaces 168 BHP along with 184 ft lbs of torque. The transmission system is connected to the rear wheels of this rear wheel drive hatchback.

The lithium ion battery connected to the flat floor of the chassis of the i3 is charged via plug in measures along with regenerative braking. BMW officially puts the distance travelled solely on electric power at 140 miles. However, on the test track, the i3 was able to travel close to 100 miles solely on electric power. Overall, the i3 could be quite fuel efficient when used on a daily basis.

The other variant of the i3 will sport a 650 cc displacing twin turbo petrol engine lifted off the C650 GT. The engine starts up when the battery charge on the vehicle reaches the lowest point. The battery acts like a generator to fire up the engine and this actually increases the fuel efficiency of the ride. Base price of the vehicle is expected to start from £38,000 and this will place the i3 at par with the BMW 330d.

The i3 features an increase in the ride height and this is a departure from the standard policy applied by BMW for the older models. 19 inch rims are used as standard on the vehicle and this gives better ground clearance for the vehicle. 155 / 70 is the standard issue rubber for the rims up front while the rear wheel mounts measure 175 / 65.

BMW is offering additional 20 inch rims as optional with the i3 and the vehicle will also feature three distinct carbon fiber body structures. The doors are frameless and this is a new technology on vehicles such as the "I" series. BMW had revealed the first model of the I Series at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011 and the vehicle sported coach styled doors back then.

The aluminum frame and plastic body is a new component on the vehicle and use of carbon fiber make the vehicle light weight and helps in steering the vehicle effectively. The i3 is a rival to the Mini Clubman while the interior has been designed to enhance the entire feel of driving. Passenger space is sufficient although the boot space is not the largest in its class. However, comparing the technologies involved, space is just a figure.
