BMW M5 with xDrive Ready for Launch

BMW sheds some light for the future M5. The German model will have all-wheel drive xDrive and will have five different running modes.

The new BMW M5 generation is looming on the horizon and the Germans are looking to prepare the launch properly. The Bavarians released a series of official information on the new performance sedan, including rumors which announced the presence of integral traction. These proved to be true, the new BMW M5 becoming the first model the M Division's history that receives xDrive technology.

One novelty is the driving mode capable of completely altering the behavior of the car, both dynamically and in terms of safety. The new BMW M5 will always start in 4x4 mode, the one in which the full xDrive is active. However, even so, the behavior will be one biased towards the rear axle. Also active at startup is DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) mode, which is the cluster of systems that maintain adhesion and stability.

Furthermore, the driver can select the MDM mode, the abbreviation for M Dynamic Mode. This setting offers a 4x4 experience with a more sporty character, with even more resources transmitted to the rear axle - a kind of handout for those with a passion for drifting.
Three other different modes of operation are only possible with the deactivation of DSC safety systems. Deactivation of the DSC can be done on three levels: full-wheel drive (4WD), sporty all-wheel drive (4WD Sport) and rear-wheel drive (2WD).

The 4WD mode has a neutral behavior, with more security, intended to be used on roads with lower quality. The 4WD Sport mode is designed to run on the track, under dry asphalt conditions. Last but not least, the BMW M5 can offer simple rear-wheel drive, and a precise driving mode thanks to the Active M differential.

At first glance, BMW has made things very complicated. However, the Germans tell us straight away that a simple push of the DSC button activates the MDM mode. A long push of the DSC button completely deactivates the safety systems and brings to the central display the three modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD. With the buttons on the center console or even via touch screen, the driver can select the desired travel mode.

The Active M differential is responsible for the torque distribution between the rear axle wheels. This active control element is part of the M xDrive functionality and its locking effect can be varied between 0 and 100 percent, as required by the situation. This ensures improved traction, agility and handling when the car is driven in a very sporty manner or on roads with varying levels of adhesion - that is, exactly when it is needed the most.

To help customers, BMW also offers two buttons (M1 and M2) that can store your favorite settings.
BMW did not give details regarding the engine's performance, but emphasized that it is a carefully modified version of the V8 engine with a displacement of 4.4 liters. The unit promises an average fuel consumption of 10.5 liters every 100 kilometers and an emission rate of 241 g/km. The engine will be assisted by an automatic transmission, Drivelogic, with eights steps, which can also be operated via paddles placed behind the steering wheel.
