BMW M4 Iconic Lights Concept: New Laser Headlights and OLED Taillights
|   Tuesday, January 13, 2015
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 in Las Vegas, BMW brought further proof that it is a world leader in developing laser headlights. Having already delivered to customers the first models with laser lights, the German manufacturer presented new laser features to future cars.

BMW could not be absent from the new technology fair CES 2015 held in Las Vegas. The German manufacturer brought, as promised, a new revolutionary lighting technology.
So we have a new generation of laser lights, already in series production with the new BMW i8.

Now, laser headlights provide a long-range beam - up to 600 meters - in combination with the BMW Selective Beam (high beam assist, effective anti-glare). At CES, BMW presents ways that laser headlights when integrated with extensive support systems and vehicle sensors can be used to implement new smart lighting for improved safety and comfort. For example, you can use the navigation system with cornering illumination in advance, while Dynamic Light Spot based on laser can signal people or animals at night from a distance of up to 100 meters.

The BMW M4 Iconic Lights Concept, with its body painted in shades of Cool White Metallic, offers a new interpretation of the BMW-specific dual round headlights. In motion, the laser technology can be identified by fine bands of blue inside the headlights. However, the taillights of the concept are based on OLED technology (organic LED), which produce light from semiconductor layers of organic material a few millimeters thick.

So we have for the first time taillights and rear turn signals that feature OLED technology. Illuminated surfaces are positioned so as to produce a three-dimensional effect. OLEDs have the advantage that they open up new possibilities for designers thanks to their very compact dimensions.

BMW headlights set new standards in laser beam radius and luminosity. Inside the laser headlights, blue monochrome laser light is converted into harmless white light. A special optical system directs rays from high-performance diodes to a phosphor plate inside the lighthouse, where the beam is converted into very bright white light, which is similar to natural light and is pleasant to the eye.

Although it consumes 30 percent less energy, the parallel light beam is ten times more intense than that produced by halogen headlights, xenon or LED. BMW laser headlights have a range of up to 600 meters which is more than double the conventional headlamps for increased safety in the dark. BMW Selective Beam system based on cameras is controlled to prevent glare from the front car, or those coming from the opposite direction.

BMW presented for the first time the OLED elements taillights on the BMW Future Luxury Vision concept, which had its world premiere in Beijing in April 2014.
BMW M4 Iconic Lights Concept also comes with a new interpretation of design. The M style OLED taillights mark a new development design for BMW taillights, which, with the launch of the BMW 7 Series, was reinforced through the distinctive "bright" effect.
