BMW M Series Down Memory Lane
|   Thursday, August 29, 2013
This is the 35th year since BMW started producing its iconic M Series Performance racing vehicles. The first vehicle to emerge was the iconic M1 and ever since, the letter M has been associated with performance and is also responsible for manufacturing some of the greatest street legal vehicles of all time. BMW M GmBH which was previously known as BMW Motorsport GmBH was originally a part of BMW's racing wing, which was later assigned the job of modifying the street legal cars for BMW.

This was an iconic decision and most notable cars from BMW since, feature the M badge. The decision was first made during the 1960s while the first efficient vehicles started emerging during the 1970s. BMW initially started functioning with 35 employees and has grown steadily into one of the largest automotive companies in the world at the moment.

BMW is bent on launching the M4 by the end of the year and it will be a predecessor to the iconic BMW M3 coupe. However, the M4 will be available in a sedan body style as well and this has been done to carry forward the appeal of the M lineup further. The original M1 was showcased at the Paris Motor Show back in 1978 and was powered by a 3.5 liter M30B34 engine displacing 215 BHP.

BMW manufactured close to 456 units of the M1 during the first year of production and the car achieved immense popularity. However, the popularity of the M Series soared during the era of the M3 Coupe. It was one of the best designed and most powerful vehicles from BMW since the beginning. The M635CSi engine was one of the most popular of the lot and six years after the engine was first used in a car, BMW decided to upgrade the drive train.

It was replaced by the M88/3 and displaced 282 BHP. The engine propelled the car to a hefty 158 MPH and BMW went ahead and manufactured 5859 units of the M Series with the engine. The first BMW M5 setup the capability of the new engine block into the heart and mind of the world. BMW entered its vehicles for numerous touring car races round the globe and the M3 received critical acclaim for overall performance.

The 535i chassis was also one of the best designed chassis from BMW and the company utilized it well by mating it with a six cylindered 3.6 liter engine displacing 311 BHP along with 266 ft lb of torque. It was one of the most powerful vehicles that year and BMW went on to create history with the 535i.

BMW plans on revealing the M4 at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2014 and BMW has christened this vehicle as they plan on limiting the M3 nameplate to Coupes only. This will help preserve the M3 tag for future upgrades. The M4 weighs close to 1400 kg and this should give the car an added advantage over the current generation model.
