BMW K 1600 GTL - Laser Lights Motorcycle With Integrated Helmet Head-Up Display

A motorcycle concept with laser lights and head-up display integrated into the helmet sets new standards among motorcycle safety and foreshadows a possible deployment for future production models.

In the case of the K 1600 GTL concept, introduced at CES, the laser lights from BMW Motorrad are derived from lighting technology currently used on the BMW Group cars. Innovative laser technology is already available on models such as the BMW 7 Series and BMW i8.
BMW Motorrad has adapted this technology - established thanks to the innovation behind it - for use on motorcycles.

The optical blocks with laser beam create a light very close to the natural one but increase the headlight operating range at the same time. Thus, the distance reached by the main beams is about 600 meters, double compared to standard conventional headlamps.
In traffic, a moment of inattention can put the pilot in a dangerous situation. In 2003, BMW became the first European car manufacturer which introduced head-up display as an option for its cars.

Aiming to introduce this technology on motorcycles in the future, a development and testing process was started by BMW Motorrad and this head-up display is mounted on a BMW Motorrad helmet. It allows important data projection in a nonintrusive way in the pilot's field of vision. Basically, the rider's attention is diverted from the board instrumentation to the road, where it is most important.

The information available for display is only relevant to driving safety, for example data about the technical condition of the bike, such as tire pressure, oil level, fuel level, speed and the gear, the speed limit recognition of traffic signs, plus any warnings about traffic hazards. Through future V2V communication type (vehicle to vehicle), it will be possible to display in real time information such as warning about imminent dangers from traffic.

More than that, the head-up display allows the display of information that increases the comfort of driving. One example is viewing the route of travel.
The helmet equipped with head-up display also offers features designed to improve the emotional aspect of the motion, maintaining high levels of safety. A video camera mounted inside the helmet facing forward can record the route. A second video camera, facing rearward, could work in the future as a digital mirror. Another concept may be the function that allows viewing the position of other riders from an organized group at any time.

The helmet also comes with a mini-computer and audio system. The functions are accessed through BMW Motorrad specific controller, on the left sleeve of the handlebar. In addition to operating cameras it makes possible the customization of the information displayed on the head-up display.
Head-up display technology can be integrated into the present BMW Motorrad helmets without compromising the pilot's comfort or safety. The battery life of the system is about five hours, and it is supplied by using two interchangeable batteries.

BMW Motorrad plans to develop and implement this technology into series production in the coming years, thus adding another level of security to the various equipment levels available today.
