BMW i8 With Laser Headlights
|   Tuesday, February 25, 2014
BMW i8 is the first car in the world equipped with the innovative technology of laser illumination. From the fall of 2014, BMW will be the first manufacturer in the world to offer a production car equipped with laser headlights.

The BMW i8 enters history not only for its revolutionary plug-in propulsion technology in a hybrid sports car, and the materials used, but also as the first car with lights that take technology to a new level.

While the basic version of the BMW i8 is equipped with full LED headlights, the laser headlights are optionally available and provides double light with a beam of up to 600 m (300 m compared to the LED).
In addition, because the new laser technology, it is possible to increase the energy efficiency by 30 percent in comparison to LED lights.

In addition to reduced energy requirements, BMW laser headlights illuminate the road with a significantly higher power, but without heating the surrounding area. Laser diodes are ten times brighter than conventional light emitting diodes. Thus, they contribute not only to reducing the space required for installation inside the lamp, but also reduce the mass. The size of the reflector surface can be reduced up to ten times in comparison with LED lights. Now the reflector height was reduced to nine centimeters to less than three centimeters.

The laser lamp is extremely bright, similar to natural daylight, a positive aspect for the human eye. Through the special lenses, high performance diodes emit a powerful beam coming from a phosphor fluorescent substance inside the headlamp. This substance turns the beam into a very bright light that is ten times brighter than traditional light sources. Due to their intense and nearly ideal beam, laser diodes give a higher overall system efficiency and provide lower power consumption. In addition, the glare is eliminated by electronically controlling the beam using information provided by the front camera.

The onset of the BMW i8 will mark alongside the headlights laser technology, a number of other world firsts. The innovative chassis guarantee sports car performance with fuel consumption according to EU test cycle of just 2.1 liters per 100 km.

To achieve this performance, the BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain that features two electric motors, a 1.5-liter petrol engine making 170 kW/231 hp, and two gear boxes for acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.4 seconds. Coordinated electronic propulsion system can propel the car via front or four-wheel drive, depending on the situation.

The BMW i8 is remarkable and innovative in its use of materials too. Like the BMW I3, it is based on BMW LifeDrive structure that combines an aluminum chassis with a body made of carbon fiber. The wide range of ultralight materials which include, for example, the rear window, chemically reinforced glass like that used in mobile phones, provides a total mass of less than 1500 kg, remarkable for a plug-in hybrid car.

In pure electric driving mode, the i8 has a range of 35 kilometers at a maximum speed of 120 km/h. With both engines coupled, the electric supercar runs under 4 × 4 mode with a consumption of 2.5 liters/100 km, with emissions of 59 g/km. Total autonomy, with a full tank, is 500 km in comfort mode, and increases by 20 km in ECO PRO mode.
