BMW i8 Debuts On The Market This June
|   Sunday, March 16, 2014
By the end of the development phase and with the final preparations for production almost done with, the BMW i8 approaching its market debut. Delivery of the first cars will commence in June 2014. Overall, the performance data was improved.

Customers were able to place pre-orders for the BMW i8 in all major markets starting in autumn 2013. Thus, the demand for the BMW i8 has already exceeded the planned production volume at this time.

In parallel with completing mandatory approval, the BMW engineers were able to achieve a further improvement of the main performance data and fuel consumption.
The BMW i8 will be the first car in the world to offer innovative lighting technology in the form of laser headlights. The launch of the BMW i8 will see, along with laser technology headlights, a number of other world premieres.

Thanks to the new powertrain concept, BMW eDrive, in its plug-in hybrid configuration, the BMW i8 sees a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h achieved in 4.4 seconds, with average fuel consumption in the combined EU test cycle of 2.1 l / 100 km, and CO2 emissions of 49 g / km. The electricity consumption was measured at 11.9 kWh per 100 km.

Even if the results achieved in the EU test cycle allowed immediate comparisons to other cars, and despite their relevance for favorable taxation in many countries, the BMW i8 engineers have placed particular emphasis on fuel economy in real life.

As a result, the BMW i8 shows an outstanding efficiency not only in standard testing procedures but also in everyday traffic.

In the typical daily routes with the battery fully charged from the start, the BMW i8 can achieve fuel consumption below 5 l / 100 km in its urban movements. If the route includes extra urban driving or highway driving, the car can achieve a fuel consumption of 7 liters and under.

Even in long distances travel at high speeds, drivers can keep fuel consumption below 8 l / 100 km. Overall fuel consumption of the plug-in hybrid model is about 50 percent lower than conventional powered sports cars.

To achieve this performance, the BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain that uses two electric motors, a 1.5-liter petrol engine developing 170 kW / 231 hp and two gearboxes for acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.4 seconds.

The propulsion system, electronically coordinated, can provide propulsion via the front wheels or all-wheel drive, depending on the situation.

In the all-electric mode, with zero emissions, the BMW i8 has a maximum speed of 120 km / h and a range of 37 kilometers. In the Sport mode, the BMW i8 offers acceleration in rounds (from 80 to 120 km / h) in 2.6 seconds. Maximum speed is electronically limited at 250 km / h.

Depending on how you recharge the lithium-ion battery - from a household power socket, a special BMW panel, or from a public refueling station - the charging times vary from less than two hours, and can reach up to three hours.
