BMW i3 Fleet Of 400 Units Enters DriveNow Service In Copenhagen
|   Sunday, September 06, 2015
After the successful introduction of the BMW i3 into the DriveNow fleet in Germany, the UK and the US, the next major step is done by a fleet of 400 BMW i3 for Copenhagen.

They will come into operation on September 3rd 2015. The novelty in this case is that the fleet of vehicles with pure electric propulsion is interconnected with the public transport. For BMW i car sharing service with electric cars is an important step through which the general public has convenient access to electric mobility, the goal being to reduce traffic and emissions in cities and lead to a better quality of life.

The project is conducted in cooperation with the Danish subsidiary of the British company Arriva PLC, with a market share of 50 percent, the largest bus operator in Copenhagen.

BMW i3 proves an ideal choice for this major project: besides the fact that it was designed as a zero emission electric car, the model is the first car in the world offering intermodal navigation, which means that it incorporate public transport services into the navigation system of the car.

"Here in Copenhagen we are now already witnessing mobility of the future. It is on-demand technology, interconnected, quiet and electric. We are pleased to be able to introduce the capabilities of the BMW i3 and our expertise in future-oriented mobility concepts here in the Danish capital." said Dr. Bernhard Blättel, head of BMW Group mobility services.

Concerning the deal with Arriva he said that "We are not rivals, but cooperate with the providers of public transport in order to further develop urban mobility in a customer-oriented and sustainable way".

"We are proud and very happy to introduce this innovative solution to the city of Copenhagen together with our strong business partners. Furthermore, I am confident that DriveNow will prove as a unique opportunity for people to try out and enjoy the green means of transportation. This will contribute to a breakthrough for the electric cars," added Nikolaj Wendelboe, CEO of Arriva Denmark.

DriveNow is a decentralized service that gives customers the possibility to use a car without the need for a service representative. The car can be parked anywhere in the city, on the street parking areas. To use it only the access card is needed. The studies and traffic analyzes already demonstrate the positive impact that such a solution offers in congested areas. Therefore, DriveNow services are seen as an ideal complement to local public transport and, together with them, promote innovative transport solutions that combine several means of public transportation and can become an alternative to using the personal.

In March this year, dr. Norbert Reithofer, Director of the Board of BMW AG, announced plans to expand the car sharing service DriveNow in ten cities in North America, and up to 15 cities in Europe. Now, MINI, BMW, and BMW i3 are offered within this program in San Francisco, London, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg and Vienna. The service, launched in June 2011, includes a fleet of several thousand cars in the eight cities where it is active. Four years after DriveNow launch it has a base of approximately 500,000 customers, most of which in Germany (120,000 in Berlin alone).
