BMW Hits the Right Notes With The 120d xDrive
|   Friday, February 08, 2013
BMW has recently unveiled the 1 Series and the first vehicle to be launched in the segment was recently taken for a test run. The BMW 120d xDrive is a great vehicle on road, easy to drive, own and maintain and tells an encouraging story about the future of BMW vehicles. BMW is also planning to roll out an SUV based on similar technologies although the plan is in its nascent stage.

Meanwhile the 120d has been showcased and this vehicle provides great handling coupled with awesome reliability.
The 120d is scheduled to go on sale in Germany, Switzerland, Austria apart from China and the US and high sales are expected from these countries. The Chinese market is gaining ground as a potential market and BMW along with the other German giants are trying to capture as much market share as possible.

The Audi Quattro drive train is proven to be quite effective when it comes to wet clutching. However, BMW claims that its xDrive technology is more effective when it comes to wet clutching. Torque distribution is done effectively and the rear and front wheel distribution is exactly 60% / 40%. The 120d features all wheel drive although the vehicle is similar to its predecessor in more ways than one except for the rear wheel drive segment.

The 120d xDrive functions well even on snow and the suspension system and tires have been designed for additional traction. ABS and traction control have been provided as standard on all 1 Series vehicles as BMW is focusing on the European market as well as the East. The steering system is quite agile and corresponds well with the general performance of the 120d.

Body control is strong with no body roll or excess wheel spin. Priced at £25,015, the 120d is a great car to own and drive. It is quite cheap and is targeted at the entry level market. The 1 Series could very well rival the Mercedes Benz A Class and the vehicles are being positioned in the market to take on the A Class head on.

Sporting a top speed of 140 MPH, the BMW 120d accelerates from 0 - 60 MPH in 7.2 seconds and features a fuel efficiency of 60.1 MPG on the combined scale. CO2 emission is 123 g/km and that is a reduced figure as compared to its predecessor. Power generation is limited at 181 BHP @ 4000 RPM along with 208 ft lbs of torque @ 1750 – 2750 RPM. The engine displaces 1997 cc and that is sufficient to glide efficiently over asphalt.

The engine is mated to a six speed manual transmission system and that is the best part about the vehicle. The automated transmission is optional and BMW plans on giving customers the real thrill of driving. Additional safety measures and electronic controls assist the driver and the car monitoring system effectively keeps track of the proceedings in the vehicle. The 120d is also cheaper than the Audi A3 and the Mercedes Benz A Class, hence giving it the edge in terms of sales.
