BMW Group Innovation Days 2015: Future Propulsion Technologies
|   Monday, July 06, 2015
BMW is ready to present its avant-garde propulsion technologies: water injection for series models, BMW Series 2 Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, and a development of the fuel cell model and range autonomy of more than 500 km.

For almost 30 years, the complex tests at Miramas (Southern France) played an important role in the development of BMW cars and motorcycles. Due to the stable climate and the wide range of possible applications, the complex measuring approximately 473 hectares provides the perfect environment for intensive testing of propulsion systems and chassis technology.
The Miramas autodrome was bought by BMW France in 1986 and has since been expanded and updated constantly. Besides the test track, it has a combined length of over 50 kilometers. Now Miramas has modern facilities, offices and workshops to develop and fine-tune models and new technological components.

The prototype BMW 2 Series Active Tourer hybrid plug-in that was presented at Miramas is equipped with a petrol engine, a three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which acts the front axle, a high voltage generator mounted on the front structure and an electromotive that conveys power to the rear wheels.

The result is a system similar to the four-wheel drive sports car BMW i8 plug-in hybrid. In the design configuration for this prototype the 1.5-liter engine develops 100 kW / 136 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. The additional generator mounted on the front axle has three functions: boost for short periods providing an extra 15 kW and torque up to 150 Nm, very smooth starter for starting the internal combustion engine quickly, and generator to feed the electric battery and provide regenerative braking on both axels.

The main electric motor is located on the rear axle and provides an output of 66 kW/88 hp and a maximum torque of 165 Nm.
The plug-in hybrid prototype BMW 2 Series Active Tourer can travel up to 38 kilometers in 100 percent electric mode, and has a maximum speed of 130 km/h, while it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds and will get a mixed average consumption of about 2.0 liters/100 km, equivalent to CO2 emissions below 50 g/km in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid cars.

After the first direct injection with water on the BMW M4, the MotoGP Safety Car, direct water injection for turbocharged gasoline engines is now making its debut on a member of the new generation of engines for the BMW Group. This innovative technology, which increases efficiency by reducing the temperature of the combustion process, is presented at the BMW Group Innovation Days 2015 on a BMW 1 Series equipped with a petrol engine with three cylinders.

For over 30 years, the BMW Group developed research systems for using hydrogen as an energy source. In 2006, the company unveiled the first sedan that can use this type of fuel in daily use.

Launched in 2013, a collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation further accelerated progress toward the goal of completing the components approved for construction of a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in 2020.

Innovation Days 2015 includes for the first time drive presentations in which a demonstrative automobile with hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, showing the potential of this technology, is unveiled. The model is developed from a BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo.
