BMW Developed Street Lighting System That Includes A Charging Port For Electric Cars
|   Saturday, November 29, 2014
At Eurocities 2014 in Munich, which was attended by over 500 delegates from European cities to discuss innovative infrastructure projects, BMW presented a very efficient public lighting system.

This innovative system is the result of a pilot project called "Light and Charge". The first two prototype systems were installed at BMW Welt and became operational on November 5, the date on which it was officially inaugurated. "Light and Charge" is a revolutionary combination of LED street lighting and a refueling station for electric cars.

The charging station is integrated into BMW's I ChargeNow network, which means that users can pay for the service via monthly invoice payment method. This project is an example of how the BMW Group uses its technological expertise for the development of electric cars and to extend commitment to electromobility.

"Light and Charge is a simple and innovative solution which aims to seamlessly integrate a smoothly functioning charging station network into the urban landscape," declared Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of BMW, at the official inauguration of the first integrated street light/charging station systems.

"The BMW i ChargeNow card already offers access to the world's largest network of charging stations, and now it gives us great pleasure, in cooperation with our partners, to further expand this network with the help of the Light and Charge project. After all, a seamless charging infrastructure is essential if we want to see more electric vehicles on the road in our cities in the future."

With the modular LED design, the "Light and Charge" type is more efficient in terms of energy than conventional street lighting. It can be mounted anywhere and the modular design can be adapted to different locations. Up to four LED models may be used to provide lighting at night on the main roads, whereas one or two modules are sufficient to provide side lighting on the streets or in residential areas. As for automobile headlights, the LED technology enables a more targeted distribution of light, with lower losses.

By developing the "Light and Charge", BMW Group has proven its commitment to implement a well-oiled charging station infrastructure for electric cars. This solution also involves cooperation with the Munich authorities to overhaul the current street lighting infrastructure owned by public authorities, in order to significantly increase the number of public charging stations. The pilot project will be launched in Munich in the spring of 2015.

Electric car charging stations can be installed in any location where adequate parking is available by simply replacing conventional lighting poles with the "Light and Charge" system.

Charger cables are attached to a standard connector on the pillar for lighting, of the Light and Charge. The integrated control panel allows the driver to start charging with the push of a button. The electricity used is charged through the BMW i ChargeNow network. Worldwide, the ChargeNow network already offers BMWi customers approximately 18,000 recharging stations.

In Europe, the concept of charging regardless of provider can be further optimized using the e-roaming platform "Hubject". The "Light and Charge" systems shown and used at Munich were designed from the beginning to be integrated into the ChargeNow network and Hubject platforms. This will allow many drivers regardless of model or electricity supplier to use them.
