BMW Considers Plug-in Hybrid Version Of The New X1
|   Monday, July 27, 2015
The BMW X1, the smallest SUV from their offer, could be offered in a plug-in hybrid variant according to those from Motoring.au. The Australians spoke with a source from the German brand, which said on condition of anonymity that a plug-in hybrid version of X1 model is considered, which just received a new generation. The new BMW X1 Hybrid version is designed just for the SUV that reached its second generation and is based on the new UKL platform of the German manufacturer on which they have already developed a plug-in hybrid, the BMW Series 2 Active Tourer Hybrid, which will be launched in the spring of 2016.

The plug-in hybrid version of BMW's Series 2 Active Tourer shares the platform with the X1, and enjoys four-wheel drive thanks to its propulsion configuration. Given the fact that the X1 has a slightly larger bodywork than Series 2 Active Tourer, and that the hybrid propulsion system can be used under the first van, engineers would have no problem in developing such a model in a production version.

The only thing missing for those at BMW, at present, is the approval of an X1 hybrid variants. However, it is almost a certainty since the demand of such hybrid SUV in this segment are quite high and the market studies confirm there would be enough customers for this variant.

"Of course it's possible. The design is similar [to the 2 Series Active Tourer] so in theory we could do this, but we have to see if the customer wants this. The US market will have a different petrol engine, and for Europe the diesel engine gives us already low consumption and CO2 [emissions], so it's a question of whether it is [commercially] feasible, not if it's possible." said a source close to the X1's powertrain development team for Motoring.au at the X1's global launch.

If approved for production, the X1 plug-in hybrid would be the second plug-in hybrid SUV from BMW's offer after the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Unlike the hybrid version of the X5, the plug-in hybrid based on the X1 should share motorization with BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid. This means a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder unit on the front axle and an electric motor at the rear axle. The tank could be reduced, like in the Series 2 Active Tourer PHEV. Moreover, the battery pack could be placed under the rear seats. The fuel tank could share the space under the rear seat and front deck with battery hybrid system.

Currently, the eco version of the second generation X1 range - sDrive18d – made figures more than double in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at 4.1L / 100 km, respectively109 g and / km.

On the basis of this configuration, the plug-in hybrid would benefit from a four-wheel drive without a mechanical link between axles, which will provide a traction system with more control for the rear axle in situations with limited grip.
