Once upon a time there was the letter X. This letter was first used to describe a BMW from the mid 80s to indicate that the car benefit from four-wheel drive technology.

15 years ago, the letter X became the symbol of an entire category of automobiles and at the same time, a special form of driving pleasure.
The BMW X5 made its debut as the world's first Sports Activity Vehicle, and soon conquered both roads and off-road area, attracting a new target audience for the BMW brand.
Once again, the German premium car manufacturer has demonstrated extraordinary innovative and future-oriented spirit in automotive concepts.

Introducing the BMW X5 in 1999 founded the unique success story of BMW X cars in markets worldwide. After 15 years, a full range of BMW X models was developed based on that.

The brand range comprises of five BMW X models. They are complemented by two all-wheel-drive sports cars that are part of the BMW M GmbH portfolio, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M. Already at the third-generation, the BMW X5 continues the success story.

The second generation of the BMW X6 (Sports Activity Coupe) and BMW X3 is now in production too. The BMW X1 offers a multifaceted driving pleasure in the compact class. And the BMW X4, another Sports Activity Coupe, combines superior dynamics with sporting elegance in the medium segment. Each of these models was the first premium car of its kind in its competitive environment. And the range will continue to expand in the coming years. The BMW X7, a very spacious and luxurious model is currently under development.

The innovative combination of traction, dynamics and comfort that characterized the first generation BMW X5 has led to a huge demand especially in the US, but also in Europe and other markets. In the mid 2005, the BMW X5 numbered 500,000 units that left the assembly lines so that almost 620,000 units of the first Sports Activity Vehicle would be produced at the BMW plant in Spartanburg.

Currently, the factory in South Carolina is the competence center for BMW X models. The current generation of the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X3 as well as the BMW X4 are produced there. Also, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are also "born in the USA".

Premium quality, driving pleasure and outstanding efficiency conferred to the X3 great popularity and numerous awards. Among them were the best marks in the "Customer Satisfaction Index" (CSI) published by market research institute JD Power, and reliability of the Allgemeiner Deutscher statistics Automobilclub (ADAC).

Twice in a row, the BMW X3 was the winner of the "Four-wheel drive car of the year" and "Off-road vehicle of the year" in surveys conducted among readers of the magazines Auto Bild Allrad and Off Road. The first generation BMW X3 has sold over 600,000 copies worldwide, before being replaced by its successor in 2010.

The latest edition of the BMW X model range is the new BMW X6. The second generation of the Sports Activity Coupe is highlighted through the more expressive design and enhanced sportiness and luxurious ambience of the interior plus the amenities with innovative equipment. The optionally available adaptive suspension package ensures, like the BMW 5 Series, sportiness and comfort.
