BMW and Toyota Working on Hybrid Sports Car
|   Friday, March 28, 2014

BMW and Toyota are currently working on a unique two seated sports car, which is expected to redefine performance and set new benchmarks for future vehicles. Officials have confirmed that this new vehicle will be radically different from the current generation BMW Z4, although similarities are bound to prevail. Toyota plans on portraying this vehicle as a radical successor to its advanced FT 1 Concept that was showcased earlier this year.

This vehicle does sport its engine up front, although it is expected to be based on an all wheel drive train.
Use of a direct fuel injected engine enhances performance, while an additional electric motor has been added for greater power displacement. These power sources combine to form a super capacitor like power source, which has been used by Toyota, in their concept LMP1 sports vehicle.

Toyota has worked extensively on designing this hybrid platform, while the use of super capacitors has been credited solely to the easy of which they can absorb and discharge power, as compared to our modern generation lithium ion batteries. Size is also of primary concern and their small dimensions make super capacitors more preferable than larger sized battery packs. BMW had first worked on an environment conscious technology back in 2005 – the X3 Efficient Dynamics, while suitable modifications had been done to this technology, for better performance.

Toyota had plans to launch a super capacitor based hybrid vehicle since a long time and the Yaris Hybrid R – showcased at Frankfurt last year – was based on similar technology. Is was powered by a 1.6 liter petrol engine displacing 300 BHP, while an additional 60 BHP electric motor was mated to its rear wheels.

Functional boost was provided at the front axle, while a combined displacement of 414 BHP was developed in this process. Powering our latest Z4, will be a BMW manufactured 2.0 liter petrol engine, mated to an electric motor designed by Toyota. A sequential manual transmission system will be mated to this drive train, along with an able torque vectoring system. BMW is constantly working on new and cost effective ways to reduce weight and has plans to adopt weight reduction methods used on their i3 and i8.

Even though details are currently quite to come by, insiders have been kind enough to constantly keep us in touch, with the various developments that are currently being undertaken. For example, use of aluminum and high tensile steel has been proposed, for added strength and a composed nature. Adding carbon fiber reinforced plastic elements to non load carrying areas, reduces weight too.

We expect its outer body shell to be composed completely out of carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Despite working on a common platform, Toyota and BMW have separate views on what their respective cars should be like on the interior. This as a result, will ensure two separate vehicles from BMW and Toyota, in respective markets. This is the first sports car to develop out of this partnership and we expect successful partnership projects in future too.
