BMW and Toyota Motor Company Sign Contracts for a Better Future
|   Friday, February 01, 2013
BMW and Toyota Motor Company have signed a contract to work together on a light weight super car powered by alternate fuel cell technology. This decision has been taken, keeping in mind a strong partnership that both the companies plan on developing for mutual benefit. The contract however binds both companies to long term partnership on the joint programming on the fuel cell technology development program.

Both companies are working to develop sports cars based on alternate fuel cell technology keeping in mind the needs of the future generation.
Lightweight technology is another important aspect that requires effort and the companies are working together to achieve their common goal. BMW also signed another deal with Toyota Motor Company to work together on lithium air batteries and this is a measure which could solve the current problems with lithium batteries.

This program is based on the next generation lithium ion batteries which were discussed at a discussion in March 2012 and the development and research began the same month. The agreement decides to focus on certain points and the major one being fuel cell development. Both companies believe that alternate fuel cell treatment is possible and is a probable solution to the zero emission norm of the future. The overall fuel cell technology needs to be designed along with a new hydrogen tank and cell stack system.

The project is aimed for 2020 and both companies plan on completing the project by the deadline provided. Both companies are also looking forward to investing in infrastructure and technology dealing in alternate fuel cell research and implementing the same in vehicles. The agreement also plans on designing sports vehicles with the same technology and a joint platform is likely to be developed by the end of 2013.

Both companies plan on using each other's technology as their own and this collaboration could lead to the formation of newer technologies within a few years. Trade secrets and market access is also set to be shared in addition to technology and platform. Lightweight designing is also the chief motive of the clause and plans have already begun on ways to reduce the weight of the current vehicles.

BMW and Toyota Motor Company are utilizing their current weight reducing measures to develop a new technology and results could be expected as soon as 2015. Lithium air batteries are a new concept and both firms are equally impressed by its potential. Needless to say plans have begun since the initial days of collaboration and the work is already making fine progress.

If work goes according to plan, the way the automotive sector functions could change by the end of the decade. Alternate fuel cell could be used on track vehicles too if the performance displacement can be optimized at that level. BMW and Toyota Motor Company are planning their level best to utilize both their technologies to the optimum level and this is the best fusion of Japanese technology and German engineering. A vehicle born out of this partnership is highly anticipated.
