BMW And Toyota Could Jointly Develop A Mini Hatchback
|   Tuesday, February 17, 2015
How many auto enthusiasts remember the Morris Minor, the name of a model launched by the British company Morris in the middle of the last century? Well, the name Minor could return to the Mini range, since they are preparing a smaller city car, cheaper than current models.

BMW and Toyota plan a high-level collaboration to develop a generation of Mini class models. The information is not new, and according to the first data available, the cars that will result from this collaboration will be in the Mini and Toyota ranges.
Thus, these cars will be smaller than the current generation three-door Mini.

Obviously, the main source of inspiration of the Albion manufacturer will be the Rocketman concept. This concept was introduced by the BMW Group at the world premiere within the Geneva Motor Show from 2011. Although the names of the two cars are not known until this date, industry voices are talking about Mini Minor and Toyota Starlet.

If the information will come true, the Minor name will return on a car after 50 years. The last year in which this name has been on the market was in 1972 when the Morris company, inventor of the Mini idea stopped the production of the Morris Minor, after 25 years of presence on the market.

If considering the fact that Toyota already has a mini-class model in the case of the Aygo model, it remains to be seen whether the future Starlet will be included in the range of the Japanese brand or if it will represent Lexus, the premium brand of the group.

Also, until the presentation of the two models it will still take at least three years, during which Toyota and Mini will finalize the design and technical details. Speaking of which, the launch of conventional engine versions will be followed by the electric versions of the new models.

When the two models will be on the market, the collaboration between BMW and Toyota, which started in 2011 at the level of motorization, will become a perfect mirror of the partnership between Daimler and Renault which in 2014 presented the new generation Smart Fortwo / Forfour, and Renault Twingo. Also, the two partners have expanded cooperation to include fuel cell and battery cell technology, lightweight materials, as well as joint development of architecture and sports car components.

The Minor model, if built, is expected to be smaller and less costly compared to the standard three door hatchback Mini model. Based on the Mini Rocketman concept, presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Minor model will be 3450 mm long, which is 370 mm shorter than the three door hatchback. With a price of about 13,500 euro, the Minor model would cost about 4000 euro less in comparison.

All these measures intended to apply for Mini are aimed with the exclusive purpose to make the brand profitable. Also, this model wants to interrupt a series of three models, the Coupe, Roadster and Paceman, which have had weak sales.
