BMW and Pininfarina Amaze With A New Concept: The Gran Lusso Coupe
|   Thursday, May 30, 2013
As promised, BMW together with Pininfarina have exhibited a completely new concept of elegance at the Villa Deste Contest. The fruit of their collaboration is called Gran Lusso Coupe and is based on the current generation of the BMW 6 Series. Pininfarina tried to reinterpret the German model while retaining the defining characteristics of a BMW product: long wheelbase, wider engine hood, short overhangs and passenger compartment pushed back, with a roof line that slopes down gently.

The design of the series models has been redesigned. The front is now dominated by a traditional grid applied to the road to inspire, the dynamism of the classical models. The optical blocks have also been redesigned and decorated with LED lights to have a contemporary feel. The bumper spoiler has also been retouched to create a new balance.

The profile has new details, including the Pininfarina logo applied to the wheel arches, like a distinctive signature. The back has new optical blocks, a much lowered roof line, a spoiler with the false deflector and matte aluminum inserts. It is not missing any 21 inch wheels with five spokes, specially created by the two manufacturers.

The model is powered by a turbocharged 6 liter V12 petrol engine that can develop no less than 537 hp. About the interior there would be much to say. The piece de resistance is undoubtedly the kauri wood. It is around 48,000 years old, and has been perfectly preserved in the marshes from New Zealand. All wooden elements found inside was made of a single piece of Kauri wood, polished and lacquered, which changes color from gold to red and brown, according to the incidence of light.

The new chairs with driver-oriented dashboard, the aluminum inserts, and ceiling lining with quality Italian wool are likewise not missing. The leather comes from Italy, from the famous Fogliazzo leather factory, and has the colors black and brown Tobacco. And black chrome finishes can be found to. The ceiling was also customized with Italian virgin wool with the motif "Principe di Galles".

"The appeal of this collaboration with Pininfarina is that you get another, very different and special angle on facets like luxury and exclusivity," notes Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design. "The Italian company, after all, has always been a byword for these criteria in particular, demonstrating time and again its keen sensitivity and exceptional finesse in these areas. In Pininfarina we have found the ideal partner to lend shape to this vehicle concept."

"The result of this cooperative venture is far greater than the sum of its parts," says Fabio Filippini, chief of design at Pininfarina. "When two such tradition-rich and experienced brands join forces to turn a vision into reality, something utterly new and exciting emerges. From start to finish, this project was defined by a mutual respect for the identity of the other company."

Along the years BMW has also worked with other design houses such as Zagato. As a result of this collaboration the famous BMW Z4 Zagato had resulted.

The people from BMW and Pininfarina have not announced plans to mass produce this concept. The purpose of this project was to promote an exercise of imagination and collaboration of the two companies.
