BMW 7 Series Gets Version That Consumes Only 2 liters/100 km

BMW continues the assault of hybrid models and will launch in Geneva the new version 740e. However, the German manufacturer brings to the forefront the new division iPerformance too. The latter will bring together all hybrid models of the company.

This represents, at the same time, the first hybrid model that is proposed in the 7 Series, as well as the third BMW hybrid version after the X5 and 3 Series.
BMW 7 Series in its hybrid version is proposed in three different versions: normal wheelbase (740e), long wheelbase and traction on an axle (740Le), long wheelbase and traction on the rear axle, as well as all-wheel (740Le xDrive).

The hybrid has the smallest engine in the range, a turbocharged four-cylinder in-line unit with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which benefit from Twin Power Turbo technology. The unit develops 258 horsepower between 5,000 and 6,500 rpm, while maximum torque is 400 Nm between 1250 and 4800 rpm. The main turbo unit is further assisted by an electric motor, equipped with the eDrive technology, which delivers 113 horsepower and a torque of 250 Nm.

The two engines arranged into the hybrid version of the 7 Series jointly develop 326 horsepower. The announced fuel consumption is just 2.1 liters / 100 km (over 115 mpg), while carbon dioxide emissions are set at only 49 grams / km in a combined cycle. The model does not excel in terms of electrical autonomy, which is 40 km, but can reach a top speed of 120 km / h. The hybrid ensemble can help the sedan accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h (0 to 96 mph) in just 5.5 or 5.7 seconds, depending on the specification.

Also, in the case of the normal regime, the top speed could double, reaching 240 km / h. This way, the 740e version of the Bavarian manufacturer arrives on the market segment of the less polluting models, along with Mercedes Benz S 500e, Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid and obviously the Tesla Model S.
Excluding the prototype provided by Tesla, which has a 100 percent electric propulsion, the 740e can be proud of both the best range in electric mode of the models mentioned above and with the lowest fuel consumption.

Using a 9.2 kW lithium-ion battery, the limo can provide a range of 40 km (740e and 740Le) and 37 kilometers (740Le xDrive). To recharge, the owner has to wait four hours if using a household outlet, and less than three hours if uses a special transformer BMW i Wallbox.

The new 740e comes available with a special button eDrive mounted on the center console. This allows running in electric mode only. Running without emissions will be done until the battery is exhausted or until the driver presses the accelerator to the bottom.

As on the series version, the customers will have available Driving Experience Control too, which represents that command center which will allow the driver to choose between Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Adaptive driving modes.
